2023 New Jersey Senate Election
The 2023 New Jersey State Senate elections were held on November 7, 2023. New Jersey voters elected state senators in all of the state's legislative districts for a four-year term to the New Jersey Senate. This was the first election after New Jersey legislative districts, 2021 apportionment, redistricting following the 2020 United States census. The winners of these elections were sworn in on January 9, 2024. Democrats retained their 25–15 majority over Republicans. New Jersey Democratic Party, Democrats flipped one seat, the 3rd district. New Jersey Republican Party, Republicans flipped the 12th district from an elected Republican who became a Democrat in February 2023. Richard Codey
Richard James Codey (born November 27, 1946) is an American Democratic Party politician who served as the 53rd governor of New Jersey from 2004 to 2006. He has served in the New Jersey Senate since 1982 and served as the President of the Senate from 2002 to 2010. He represents the 27th Legislative District, which covers the western portions of Essex County and the southeastern portion of Morris County. Codey is the longest-serving state legislator in New Jersey history, having served in the New Jersey Legislature continuously since January 8, 1974. He has served as the Deputy Senate President Pro Tem since 2022. Early life Codey grew up in his family's funeral home in Orange. Nicholas Sacco
Nicholas J. Sacco (born November 17, 1946) is an American Democratic Party politician, who has been serving in the New Jersey State Senate since 1994, where he represents the 32nd Legislative District. Sacco serves in the Senate as the chairman of the Transportation Committee, and is also a member of the Law and Public Safety and Veterans' Affairs Committee. He concurrently serves as mayor of North Bergen as he is allowed to hold two offices under a grandfather clause in a bill that prohibited dual office holding. Sacco announced on February 24, 2022 that he would not seek re-election for state senate. Personal life Sacco was born in Jersey City on November 17, 1946.
