2023 Moscow Drone Strikes
On 30 May 2023, amidst the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, invasion of Ukraine, the Russian capital of Moscow was subject to several drone strikes. At least eight drones were involved in the attacks. Five of the drones were shot down by air missiles, the other three were suppressed by electronic warfare systems. Russia blamed Ukraine. Moscow was also targeted and struck by drones numerous times in June, July, August, and September. Background In February 2022, Russia launched Russian invasion of Ukraine, an invasion of Ukraine. Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin (1 June 1961 – 23 August 2023) was a Russian mercenary leader and oligarch. He led the Wagner Group, a private military company, and was a close confidant of Russian president Vladimir Putin until launching a rebellion in June 2023. The Wagner Group (), officially known as PMC Wagner (, ), is a Russian state-funded private military company (PMC) controlled 2023 Wagner Group plane crash, until 2023 by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a former close ally of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, and since then by Pavel Prigozhin. The UJ-26 Bober () is a type of Ukrainian long-range loitering munition (suicide drone). In December 2022 the Telegram account Lachen Pyshe announced a public fundraising campaign called Hovor Khell, for a domestic unmanned aerial vehicle for Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR). On 11 May 2023 it published photographs and said that it had already been used to accrue losses by Russian forces during the Russo-Ukrainian War. On 30 May, it was used to conduct a series of drone strikes in suburban Moscow. The drone reportedly has a range of 600 to 1,000 km, and its warhead is a KZ-6 shaped charge.
