2023 Mississippi Attorney General Election
The 2023 Mississippi elections took place on November 7, 2023, with the primary on August 8 and any required runoffs on August 29. All executive offices in the state up for election, as well as all 52 seats of the Mississippi State Senate, all 122 seats in the Mississippi House of Representatives, and many local offices. The qualifying deadline for all 2023 Mississippi races was February 1, 2023. Special elections also took place during the year. The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Mississippi were held on November 8, 2022, to elect the four U.S. representatives from the state of Mississippi, one from each of the state's four congressional districts. The elections coincided with other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. The elections were the first under Mississippi's new congressional map after redistricting completed by the state government. All four races were considered uncompetitive in the general election and turnout from Mississippians was the lowest out of the entire United States, measuring in at 31.5%. The Attorney General of Mississippi is the chief legal officer of the state and serves as the state's lawyer. Only the Attorney General can bring or defend a lawsuit on behalf of the state. The Attorney General is elected statewide for a four-year term with no term limits. The 2019 Mississippi Attorney General election was held on November 5, 2019, to elect the Attorney General of Mississippi. Incumbent Jim Hood declined to seek re-election to a fifth term, instead running unsuccessfully for Governor. State Treasurer Lynn Fitch won the Republican nomination in a primary runoff against Andy Taggart, and she defeated Democratic nominee Jennifer Riley Collins in the general election. Lynn Fitch (born October 5, 1961) is an American lawyer, politician, and the 40th Mississippi Attorney General. She is the first woman to serve in the role and the first Republican since 1878. Previously, she was the 54th State Treasurer of Mississippi from 2012 to 2020. Personal life and early career Fitch is a native of Marshall County, Mississippi, and grew up in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She attended University of Mississippi where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration as well as her Juris Doctor, in five years. Fitch has two daughters and one son.
