2023 Leicester City Council Election
The 2023 Leicester City Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect all 54 members of Leicester City Council in England. This was on the same day as other 2023 United Kingdom local elections, local elections, and the election for the directly elected Mayor of Leicester#2023, Mayor of Leicester. Labour's Peter Soulsby was re-elected as mayor and the party retained its majority on the council, but with a significant loss of 22 seats compared to its position at the previous election in 2019. The Conservatives gained 17 extra seats against the national trend. The Green Party and Liberal Democrats also made gains, with each being represented by three seats. Leicester City Council
Leicester City Council is the local authority for the city of Leicester, in the ceremonial county of Leicestershire, England. Leicester has had a council from medieval times, which has been reformed on numerous occasions. Since 1997 the council has been a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council; it is independent from Leicestershire County Council. The council consists of 54 councillors, overseen by a directly elected mayor. The council also appoints a ceremonial Lord Mayor who chairs council meetings; the directly elected mayor is termed the City Mayor to distinguish the post from the Lord Mayor. The 2024 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 4 July 2024 to elect all 650 members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons. Leicester East
Leicester East is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since July 2024 by Shivani Raja of the Conservative Party. Constituency profile This is an urban constituency, much of which is densely developed as housing, retail or industry. The seat does not include central Leicester, skirting its ring road, but is served by buses and cycle routes into Leicester City Centre, which is within normal walking distance of the division's south-west quarter. Manjula Sood
Manjula Paul Sood is a British Labour Party politician, community service participant and former educator. In 2008, Sood became the first Asian female Lord Mayor in the United Kingdom. Early life Sood immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1970. She became in 1973 the first female Asian primary school teacher in Leicester, England. She taught there for almost twenty years before retiring because of ill health. During her time as a teacher, she introduced multiculturalism in the education sector. Parmjit Singh Gill (born 20 December 1966) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. As Member of Parliament for Leicester South from July 2004 to May 2005, he was the first ethnic-minority Liberal Democrat MP. Susan Waddington (born 23 August 1944) is a British education official and Labour Party politician who was Member of the European Parliament for Leicester. Born in Norfolk, Waddington attended Blyth Grammar School and the University of Leicester. She worked as an adult education field officer, before becoming an assistant director at Derbyshire LEA, and then at Birmingham LEA. In 1973, Waddington was elected to Leicestershire County Council, serving until 1991, and she was leader of the council from 1982 until 1984.
