2023 Guyana Defence Force Helicopter Crash
On 6 December 2023, a Bell 412EP helicopter operated by the Guyana Defence Force crashed in western Guyana, killing five out of the seven on board. The crash happened about 30 miles east of Arau near the Venezuelan border. The helicopter carried senior GDF military officers, and was reportedly conducting "border operations". The crash occurred during a Guyana–Venezuela crisis (2023–present), political crisis between Guyana and Venezuela regarding the Guyana–Venezuela territorial dispute. The crash marked the deadliest incident in Guyana's recent military history since the Rupununi uprising in 1969. Timeline Under the command of Col. Indo-Guyanese or Guyanese Indians, are Guyanese nationals of Indian origin who trace their ancestry to India and the wider subcontinent. They are the descendants of indentured servants and settlers who migrated from India beginning in 1838, and continuing during the British Raj. They are a subgroup of Indo-Caribbean people. The vast majority of indentured labourers in Guyana came from North India, most notably the Bhojpur and Awadh regions in the Hindi Belt of the present-day states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. A significant minority also came from Southern India. Among the immigrants, there were also labourers from other parts of South Asia. Guyana Defence Force Ground
The Guyana Defence Force Ground is a multi-use stadium on Vlissengen Road in Georgetown, Guyana. Owned by the Guyana Defence Force and based within Camp Ayanganna, it is used mostly for football matches and athletics competitions, though in the past it has hosted one first-class cricket match. This match was the final of the Guystac Trophy between Demerara and Berbice in October 1987. The match saw both Rudolph Doodnauth of Berbice and Clyde Butts of Demerara take five wicket hauls, with the match ending in a draw. The Bell 412 is a utility helicopter of the Huey family manufactured by Bell Helicopter. It is a development of the Bell 212, with the major difference being the composite four-blade main rotor. It is a twin-turbine helicopter that has been popular on the civilian and military markets, and major users include Canada, Italy, and Japan. Several hundred have been produced since its introduction in 1979, and several iterations of upgrades and variations have been produced, such as with upgraded cockpit electronics. A consultative referendum was initiated by the government of Nicolás Maduro regarding Venezuela's claim over the Guayana Esequiba, whose territory is disputed with, and controlled by, neighboring Guyana. The referendum took place on 3 December 2023 in Venezuela. The population of the territory in question was not consulted and did not vote as voting only took place within Venezuela. The referendum consisted of five questions concerning various aspects of Venezuela's claim to territory controlled and administered by Guyana, including rejection of the International Court of Justice's jurisdiction over the dispute, the establishment of a Guayana Esequiba state, and granting its population immediate Venezuelan citizenship.
