2022–23 SVB Tweede Divisie
The 2022–23 SVB Tweede Divisie was the 65th official season of the SVB Tweede Divisie, the 2nd division of Suriname. Sunny Point won the Second Division, but were not promoted due to the new formation of the Suriname Major League. The season had a delayed beginning, and began on 10 January 2023. It concluded on 23 July 2023. Teams Flora and Slee Juniors were promoted to the 2022–23 SVB Eerste Divisie. SVB Tweede Divisie
The SVB Tweede Divisie is second-highest division overall in the Surinamese football league system after the Topklasse, where the top club is promoted to each season. The weakest club is relegated to the Lidbondentoernooi. The league was previously known as the SVB Eerste Klasse but became the Hoofdklasse for the 2016–17 season after Suriname's top division changed its name from Hoofdklasse to Topklasse, only to be rebranded as the Tweede Divisie for the 2017–18 season. The competition was founded in 1956. Bernharddorp
Bernharddorp is an indigenous village of Lokono and Kalina Amerindians in the resort of Noord in the Para District in Suriname. History In the 1930s, Amerindians from the village of Bisri near Zanderij settled in the area which was owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paramaribo at the time. In 1950, the village was visited by Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, the consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, to install the first elected village chief. On 25 February 1951, the village was named Bernharddorp, however Bernard officially refers to Bernard of Clairvaux. Bernharddorp has a school, and in 1952, was given 214 hectares of communal land for agriculture. In 2018, the captain has asked from 8,000 hectares partially to be used for an economic development zone. Wanica District
Wanica is a district of Suriname located in the north of the country. Wanica's capital city is Lelydorp, the second-largest city in Suriname. Wanica has a population of 118,222 and an area of 443 km2. Following neighbouring Paramaribo, Wanica is the second most populated and urbanised district of Suriname. Two-thirds of the country's population live in these two districts. History The district was created in 1983 out of parts of the former Suriname District. The district was named Wanica after Pad van Wanica, the main road, Wanica Creek (present in the district), and the fact that the name had already been used on old maps. The discovery of gold in Brokopondo and Sipaliwini lead to the construction of the Lawa Railway and growth of the villages next to the railway line, and especially Kofi Djompo. Kwatta
Kwatta is a resort in Suriname, located in the Wanica District. Its population at the 2012 census was 14,151. Kwatta is named after a former cocoa plantation located here. It used to be an agriculture area, but due to its close proximity of Paramaribo, it is becoming suburban. Lelydorp
Lelydorp is the capital city of Wanica District, located in Suriname. With a population of 18,663 (2012), it is the second largest city in Suriname, after Paramaribo. History Pad van Wanica For centuries the Pad van Wanica (path of Wanica) has been the only road that leads from Paramaribo to the south. How this road came to be is unknown. It is speculated that the original inhabitants established the path. Be that as it may, a road was built there, and on either side of the road parcels were issued away. The oldest part of this road is the northern part of it, which is closest to Paramaribo. Moengo
Moengo () is a town in Suriname, located in the Marowijne district, between Paramaribo and the border town Albina on the Cottica River. Moengo is also a resort (municipality) in the district of Marowijne. Moengo was the capital of Marowijne District between 1932 and 1945. The current capital is Albina. History Moengo started as a Maroon village on top of a hill overlooking the Cottica River. The settlement was later abandoned due to the difficulty of building houses on the bauxite rich ground. In 1916, Alcoa founded the first bauxite mine in Suriname, and this marks the beginning of the current town. Moengo was designed in 1919 to house 4,000 people. It would become a major centre for the mining and storage of bauxite. Moengo was a segregated town. Groningen, Suriname
Groningen is the capital town of the Saramacca District, Suriname. Groningen only began to grow after 1960. Around that time the East-West Link, a road linking Albina via Paramaribo to Nieuw Nickerie was built. This let Groningen become accessible by road. The town features: an office of the district commissioner; a post office; an office for the police commander, an office of the State health foundation(SZF) and the J. Eliazer football stadium, named after the founder of the Football Federation of Saramacca and president. There is also a Moravian Church and a Roman Catholic church. In 1910, a nursing home for yaws sufferers was established. It was closed after it was discovered that the disease could be cured within days by applying Salvarsan. Meerzorg
Meerzorg (Sranan Tongo: Ansu) is a town and resort (municipality) in Suriname, located on the eastern bank of the Suriname River, directly opposite the capital Paramaribo. Its population at the 2012 census was 12,405. Since 2000 it has been connected to Paramaribo by the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, named after the former President Jules Wijdenbosch. History Meerzorg is named after the sugar plantation Meerzorg. The plantation was founded at the end of the 17th century, and was originally called Plantage Amsinck. On 10 October 1712, Jacques Cassard captured the plantation for France, and threatened Paramaribo across the Suriname river. Negotiations started, and on 27 October Cassard left with ƒ747,350 (€8.1 million in 2018) worth of goods and slaves.
