2022–23 Liiga Season
The 2022–23 Liiga season was the 48th season of the Liiga, the top level of ice hockey in Finland, since the league's formation in 1975. Teams Regular season Top six advanced straight to the quarter-finals, while teams between 7th and 10th positions played a wild card round for the final two spots. Liiga
The Liiga, colloquially called the Finnish Elite League in English or FM-ligan in Swedish, is the top professional ice hockey league in Finland. The league comprises 16 teams from all around Finland with relegation and promotion between the Mestis. The winner of the Liiga playoffs is awarded the Kanada-malja at the end of each season. Teams from the Liiga participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF's annual Champions Hockey League (CHL), competing for the European Trophy. Participation is based on the strength of the various leagues in Europe (excluding the European/Asian Kontinental Hockey League). The Liiga was established in 1975 to replace the former SM-sarja, which was fundamentally an amateur competition. Lukko
Rauman Lukko (Finnish for "lock") is a Finnish sports club based in Rauma, Finland, Rauma, Finland, best known for its men's professional ice hockey team. The club was founded as Rauma Woodin Lukko in 1936. The representative team currently plays in the Finnish Liiga, the premier men's professional ice hockey league in Finland. Juuso Hietanen
Juuso Hietanen (born 14 June 1985) is a Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman for HPK of the Liiga. Playing career Hietanen made his SM-liiga debut with HPK during the 2003–04 season, and two years later he became a regular player on the team. He also visited Pelicans early in his career and was part of the Finnish national junior team in the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. At the time of his SM-liiga debut, he was the first third generation player in the top level of Finnish ice hockey. In 2006 he celebrated the championship with HPK. He scored two goals and an assist in the second final, but HPK suffered its only loss in the series. In 2007, he moved to Sweden to play in the Elitserien with Brynäs IF and for the 2010–11 season he signed with HV71. Hietanen played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) from 2011 to 2021, first with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod and later with Dynamo Moscow. The Helsinki Ice Hall (, ), colloquially called Nordis, is an indoor arena located in the Taka-Töölö neighborhood of Helsinki, Finland. The arena has a seating capacity of 8,200. History Helsinki Ice Hall has been the home of HIFK of the Liiga since its construction in 1966. The arena has also served as the home of Jokerit, first from 1967 until the team moved to Helsinki Halli (previously Hartwall Arena) in 1997, and again for some of their home games beginning in 2023. Helsinki Ice Hall used to be the main venue for the majority of important ice sports events and indoor arena concerts held in Finland but, after the constructions of Gatorade Center in 1990, Hartwall Arena in 1997, and Tampere Deck Arena in 2021, many of the largest events now take place in the newer arenas. Ville Peltonen
Ville Sakari Peltonen (born 24 May 1973) is a Finnish ice hockey coach and a former professional ice hockey forward. Peltonen was drafted by the San Jose Sharks as their third round pick, 58th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. During his professional career, he has played 382 NHL games for Sharks, Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers. Internationally, he represented the Finland men's national ice hockey team, and was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2016. Playing career Peltonen started playing hockey with Etelä-Vantaan Urheilijat (EVU), and moved to HIFK when he was ten years old. He debuted the Finnish SM-liiga in 1991–92 SM-liiga season, playing six games in regular season. HC TPS
TPS or Turun Palloseura is an ice hockey team and 10-time champion of SM-liiga and 1-time champion of SM-sarja. They play in Turku, Finland, at Gatorade Center. In terms of championships, TPS is the second all-time most successful team in SM-Liiga, right behind Tappara. Team history TPS was established in 1922 as Turun Palloseura, from which the acronym derives. The club began ice hockey activities after 1929. Today, the full name of the company that owns the ice hockey team is ''HC TPS Turku Oy''. TPS has won the Finnish Championship in ice hockey 11 times: 1956, 1976, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2010. Vaasan Sport
Sport, known by its full name as Hockey Team Vaasan Sport Oy or simply Vaasan Sport, is a Finnish ice hockey team playing in Liiga, and is based at the 5,200-capacity Vaasa Arena in Vaasa. The team was established in 1939 as IF Sport (Idrottsföreningen Sport). History Vaasan Sport was founded in 1939 as IF Sport. The team was involved in the founding of the Finnish top division Liiga, formerly known as SM-Liiga, in 1975, but was relegated only one year later after the 1975–1976 season. After the relegation, Sport played in the Finnish First Division (since then renamed to Mestis), until they were relegated in 1991–1992 to the Finnish Second Division.
