2022 Visit By Nancy Pelosi To Taiwan
United States politician Nancy Pelosi, while serving as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited Taiwan (officially the Republic of China) on August 2, 2022. A delegation of five Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party members of the House accompanied Pelosi on the visit. The two-day trip to Taiwan was part of a tour of Asia that also included stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. President Joe Biden discouraged but did not prevent Pelosi from going; the White House later affirmed her right to visit the island country. Taiwanese foreign minister Joseph Wu received Pelosi and her delegation. Tsai Ing-wen (; pinyin: ''Cài Yīngwén''; born 31 August 1956) is a Taiwanese politician and legal scholar who served as the seventh president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2016 to 2024. The Han Kuang Exercise () is the annual military exercise of the Republic of China Armed Forces in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu Islands, Matsu for combat readiness in the event of an attack from the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China.
