2022 Yerevan Explosion
On 14 August 2022, at 13:23 local time, a large explosion took place in the Surmalu shopping centre in the Armenian capital of Yerevan. It caused widespread destruction and fire, leaving dozens of dead and injured. The explosion killed 16 people and injured 63, with nine missing as of 20 August. Events The explosion occurred at a fireworks warehouse, which tore through the Surmalu shopping centre in Yerevan. A large fire ensued and destroyed much of the market. 200 firefighters attended the scene. Response The victims were named the following day. Armenia Time (AMT) is a time zone used in Armenia. Armenia Time is four hours ahead of UTC at UTC+04:00. Clock time is about one hour later than solar noon in Armenia. Consequently, population activity hours are similar to those in Paris or Barcelona, which have about the same shift to solar time. They are about one hour later compared to those in Berlin and Vienna, and are two hours later than those in Warsaw and New York. Daylight saving time Armenia does not utilize Daylight saving time. Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan ( hy, Նիկոլ Վովայի Փաշինյան, ; born 1 June 1975) is an Armenian politician serving as the prime minister of Armenia since 8 May 2018. A journalist by profession, Pashinyan founded his own newspaper in 1998, which was shut down a year later for libel. He was sentenced for one year for defamation against then Minister of National Security Serzh Sargsyan. He edited the newspaper '' Haykakan Zhamanak'' ("Armenian Times") from 1999 to 2012.
