2022 Russia–Ukraine Tornado Outbreak
On 18 September 2022, a small but significant and fatal tornado outbreak began in Eastern Ukraine and moved into Russia, producing at least 8 tornadoes, including an intense F3 tornado and three possible, unconfirmed tornadoes. On September 19, a significant tornado occurred in Russia, with another possible, unconfirmed tornado and severe straight-line thunderstorm wind damage. Through the event, 3 people were killed and at least 8 others were injured. Meteorological history On September 18, thunderstorms developed over northwest Ukraine. The environment the storms began to move into had strong low-level wind shear, which is needed for severe wind gusts and tornadoes. On September 19, Tomas Pucik, a researcher for the European Severe Storms Laboratory, noted the environment on the 18th was “very conductive” for tornadoes. 2009 Krasnozavodsk Tornado
The 2009 Krasnozavodsk tornado was an F3 tornado that occurred on Junе 3, 2009, in Krasnozavodsk near Sergiev Posad in the Moscow region at 22.15 MST. It was the first powerful tornado in the vicinity of Moscow since 1984. By damage registered in photo and video materials, this tornado is categorised at F2 at its rise, and at F3 at maximum stage. Synopsis Late on June 3, 2009, a cold-core non-tropical low pressure area located over the Baltic Sea collided with a warm air mass, creating atmospheric instability. The result was a line of severe thunderstorms, also known as a squall line, in the Moscow area. Lgov, Kursk Oblast
Lgov ( rus, Льгов, p=ˈlʲɡof) is a town in Kursk Oblast, Russia, located on both banks of the Seym River ( Desna's tributary) west of Kursk. Population: 26,000 (1972). History It was first mentioned in a chronicle in 1152 under the name of Olgov (a possessive adjective from an old Russian name Olg, or Oleg). Lgov was razed to the ground by the Mongols.
