2022 Bankass Massacres
On 18 and 19 June 2022, 132 civilians were killed by Islamist insurgents in Bankass Cercle, Mopti Region, Mali. Background During the early 2010s, an Islamist insurgency in the Sahel and the Mali War began. Massacres in central Mali's Mopti Region Mali attacks, have included those in Ogossagou massacre, Ogossagou in March 2019, Sobane Da massacre, Sobane Da in June 2019 and Mopti bus massacre, Bankass in December 2021. The violence is also linked to nomadic conflict, with the farming Dogon people (who mostly practice traditional African religion, traditional religion) contesting water and land with the nomadic Fula people, Fula, who are mostly Muslims. Diallassagou (''Jà:-sɔ̀gû:'') is a small town and commune in the Cercle of Bankass in the Mopti Region of Mali. In 1998 the commune had a population of 18,799. Sobane Da Massacre
On 10 June 2019, the Dogon village of Sobane Da in Mali was attacked. Moulaye Guindo, mayor of neighbouring Bankass, blamed a Fulani militia group. The attack killed 35 people, revised from an earlier claim of 95 killed with 19 missing. A survivor said the attackers numbered about 50, driving motorbikes and pickup trucks. The government of Mali has suspected that terrorists have committed the attack. Background The Fulanis who are traditionally herders and the Dogon who are traditionally farmers have had a historic dispute over grazing land and water which has been exacerbated by the spread of jihadism in Mali. The Dogon have accused the Fulani of supporting Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups operating in Mali, while the Fulani have accused the state of sponsoring the Dogons to attack them. Mopti Region In The Mali War
Mopti ( Bambara: ߡߏߕߌ tr. Moti) is a town and an urban commune in the Inner Niger Delta region of Mali. The town is the capital of the Mopti Cercle and the Mopti Region. Situated 630 km northeast of Bamako, the town lies at the confluence of the Niger and the Bani Rivers and is linked by an elevated causeway to the town of Sévaré. The urban commune, which includes both Mopti and Sévaré, had a population of 114,296 in the 2009 census. Geography Mopti lies on the right bank of the Bani River, a few hundred meters upstream of the confluence of the Bani with the Niger River. Between August and December when the rivers flood the Inner Niger Delta, the town becomes a series of islands connected by raised causeways.
