The 2021 Hartlepool Borough Council election took place on 6 May 2021 as part of the 2021 local elections in the United Kingdom. A byelection for the Hartlepool constituency, which has identical boundaries to the council, was held on the same day. 2022 Hartlepool Borough Council Election
The 2022 Hartlepool Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect members of Hartlepool Borough Council. This was on the same day as other local elections. 13 of the 36 seats were up for election, with 1 ward (Rural West) electing 2 councillors. Background Hartlepool is traditionally a Labour council, with Labour forming the majority party for most of its history. The council fell into no overall control from 1976 to 1979, 2000 to 2004, 2008 to 2010, and from 2019 to the present. A coalition of Conservative, Independent Union, and Veterans and People's Party councillors took control of the council in 2019. IU and VPP councillors left their parties to join the Brexit Party in September 2019, but most rejoined their original parties in early 2020. The Borough of Hartlepool is a unitary authority area in ceremonial County Durham, England. The borough's largest town is Hartlepool. It borders the County Durham district as well as the boroughs of Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees. A by-election for the House of Commons constituency of Hartlepool in the former county of Cleveland, England, was held on 6 May 2021. The by-election was triggered following the resignation of Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Mike Hill, who resigned over allegations of sexual harassment. It was held on 6 May 2021 alongside elections to the Borough Council, Tees Valley Mayor, and Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner. The seat is part of the " red wall", a set of constituencies that historically supported the Labour Party but where the party is being challenged by increasing Conservative support. This was the first by-election to the parliament elected in 2019. Hartlepool is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Jill Mortimer of the Conservative Party from 2021. The constituency covers the town of Hartlepool plus nearby settlements. It was founded in mid-May 2017 by seven British military veterans to contest the 2017 United Kingdom general election.
