2020–21 Japan Figure Skating Championships
The 2020–21 Japan Figure Skating Championships were held in Nagano, Nagano from December 23–27, 2020. It was the 89th edition of the event. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, and ice dance. The results were part of the Japanese selection criteria for the 2021 World Championships. Qualifying Competitors either qualified at regional and sectional competitions, held from September to November 2020, or earned a bye. Skaters without a bye, but who train abroad, were awarded an exemption from the qualifiers to limit travel during the COVID-19 pandemic; the affected skaters were men's singles skater Koshiro Shimada, pair Riku Miura / Ryuichi Kihara, and ice dancers Rikako Fukase / Eichu Cho and Kana Muramoto / Daisuke Takahashi. Daisuke Takahashi
is a retired Japanese figure skater ( men's singles and ice dance) and ice show producer. As a singles skater, he is the 2010 Olympic bronze medalist, the 2010 World champion, the 2012–13 Grand Prix Final champion, a two-time (2008, 2011) Four Continents champion, and a five-time (2006–2008, 2010, 2012) Japanese national champion. Takahashi represented Japan at the 2006 Winter Olympics, 2010 Winter Olympics, and 2014 Winter Olympics. His bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics was the first Olympic medal for an Asian country in the men's singles event. He was also the first Asian man to win a World title at the 2010 World Championships. Kana Muramoto
is a retired Japanese figure skater ( women's singles and ice dance). With her skating partner, Daisuke Takahashi, she is the 2022 Four Continents silver medalist, the 2022–23 Japanese national champion and the 2022 Denis Ten Memorial Challenge champion. With her former skating partner, Chris Reed, she is the 2018 Four Continents bronze medalist, the 2017 Asian Winter Games silver medalist, and a three-time Japanese national champion (2016–2018). Oliver Zhang or Eichu Cho (; born November 21, 1997) is a Canadian-Japanese ice dancer. Rikako Fukase
Rikako Fukase (; born August 12, 1997) is a Japanese figure skater. She formerly represented Japan in ice dancing, skating with Aru Tateno and Eichu Cho (Oliver Zhang) at a total of four ISU Championships. With Cho, she is the 2020 NHK Trophy silver medalist and a two-time Japanese national medalist. Fukase has also competed in synchronized skating. In the 2022–23 season, she skated for Canada as a member of Les Suprêmes, winning gold at the 2023 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships. 2021 World Figure Skating Championships
The 2021 World Figure Skating Championships were held from March 22 to 28, 2021, at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden. Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU), the World Championships are considered the most prestigious event in figure skating, second only to the Olympics. Medals were awarded in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance. Ice Dance
Ice dance (sometimes referred to as ice dancing) is a discipline of figure skating that historically draws from ballroom dancing. It joined the World Figure Skating Championships in 1952, and became a Winter Olympic Games medal sport in 1976.
