Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Isabel Grevelt (born 11 April 2002) is a Dutch allround speed skater. Career Grevelt won the 500 m gold medal at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics which took place at Lake St. Moritz in St. Moritz, Switzerland . On 30 October 2022 she qualified for the ISU Speed Skating World Cup series after finishing fifth at the 1000 m during the national qualification tournament. Marrit Fledderus (born 15 May 2001) is a Dutch long-track speed skater. As a junior, Fledderus became national champion in the 500 metres in 2020. She represented her nation at the 2021 World Junior Speed Skating Championships. She became junior world champion in the team sprint and won the bronze medal in the 1000 metres event.
