The 2019–20 Superliga was the 64th season of the Polish Superliga, the top men's handball league in Poland Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe. It extends from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains in the south, bordered by Lithuania and Russia to the northeast, Belarus and Ukrai .... A total of fourteen teams contested this season's league, which began on 30 August 2019, and was prematurely ended due to the 2020 coronavirus outbreak. On 23 March 2020, the governing body of the competition decided to end the season, and declare PGE Vive Kielce the winners, as the first placed team in the regular season standings. The team from Kielce won their 17th title of the Polish Champions. Format The competition format for the 2019–20 season consists of 14 teams each playing a total of 26 matches, half at home and half away, with the first placed team in the standings earning the Polish Championship. The Polish Superliga, officially known as the Orlen Superliga due to its sponsorship by Orlen, is the top men's handball league in Poland. It is currently a 14 teams league, played from September to May. The competition was founded in 1956 under the name ''I Liga'' and changed its name to ''Ekstraklasa'' in 1998. Gwardia Opole
Gwardia Opole is a men's handball club from Opole, Poland, that plays in the Superliga. The current name of the club is Corotop Gwardia Opole due to sponsorship reasons. History The team was founded in 1945. In 1962, it was promoted to the first league. In his debut season in the top league, he took 4th place. In the 1963/1964 season, the team led by Edward Hyla won the bronze medal of the Polish championship (behind AZS Katowice and Sparta Katowice). In the following years, Gwardia continued to play in the first league. They were relegated in 1980, but returned to the 1st after a year when they won the 2nd league by eight points ahead of second-placed Posnania Poznań. In the 1981/1982 season, it was relegated to the second league again, where it spent the next ten years. SPR Chrobry Głogów
SPR Chrobry Głogów is a men's handball club from Głogów, Poland, that plays in the Superliga. History In 1961, thanks to Henryk Tryka and Ryszard Matuszak, the handball era began in Głogów. In 1968, the team was promoted to the second division. In 1973, the team coached by Ryszard Matuszak achieved third place in the second league. Before long, Chrobry was relegated from the second league and played in the Vojvodina Inter-League to get promoted to the second league again, but for a longer period.
