2019–20 MPBL Season
The 2019–2020 MPBL season, known as the MPBL Lakan Season or Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League and the second full season with a national scope. It was officially opened June 12, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, which coincided with the Philippine Independence Day. From 26 teams in the last conference, the third season featured 31 team. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, the season was suspended on March 11, 2020, prior to the deciding games of the Division Finals. It resumed almost a year later, on March 10, 2021, in a bubble set-up in Subic, Zambales. It ended on March 21, 2021, with Davao Occidental Tigers winning the championship against the San Juan Knights after four games in a best-of-five championship series, three games to one. Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is a men's professional sports, professional basketball league in the Philippines. History Manny Pacquiao launched the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League on August 29, 2017, starting off as a semi-professional league. According to Pacquiao, the league is not intended to be a competitor to the Philippine Basketball Association, the country's top professional basketball league. The MPBL was intended to feature both a regional commercial and barangay-level league with teams on the commercial side to have a home locality in addition to a corporate sponsor. In the first months, the league hosted teams from Luzon with future plans to expand to accommodate teams based in Visayas and Mindanao like the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. The COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines has resulted in, as of , reported cases, resulting in reported deaths, the fifth-highest in Southeast Asia, behind Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The first case in the Philippines was identified on January 30, 2020, and involved a 38-year-old Chinese woman who was confined at San Lazaro Hospital in Metro Manila. On February 1, 2020, a posthumous test result from a 44-year-old Chinese man turned out positive for the virus, making the Philippines the first country outside China to record a confirmed death from the disease. Parañaque Patriots
The Parañaque Patriots are a Filipino professional basketball team based in Parañaque. The team currently competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as one of 11 active teams based in Metro Manila. Parañaque is also one of four teams based in the Southern Manila District, playing their home games at Olivarez College Coliseum. The team is one of the MPBL's charter teams during the league's 2018 season. The team is currently owned by the City Government of Parañaque and its vice mayor Joan Villafuerte. As of 2023, the Parañaque Patriots is tied with the Laguna Krah Asia for the longest active playoff drought in the MPBL, with both teams having missed the playoffs since 2019.
