The 2019 South Africa England netball series saw South Africa national netball team, South Africa host England national netball team, England in November and December 2019 for a three-match series. The series was Jess Thirlby's first as new coach of the England team and was also Dorette Badenhorst's first home series as the new South African coach. South Africa National Netball Team
The South Africa national netball team, also known as the SPAR Proteas, represent Netball South Africa in international netball tournaments, such as the Netball World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the Netball Quad Series and the Fast5 Netball World Series. Their best result in a major tournament is a silver medal at the 1995 World Netball Championships. As of 1 March 2024, South Africa are currently fifth in the World Netball Rankings. History Early tests In 1956, South Africa hosted a touring England. The tour featured a series of three Tests, with England winning all three. In 1959 South Africa toured England for the first time, winning 18 out of 25 matches. However, they once again lost all three Test matches against England. Precious Mthembu
Precious Mthembu (born 11 July 1984) is a former South Africa netball international and current netball coach. Mthembu made 97 senior appearances for South Africa. She represented South Africa at the 2007 and 2015 Netball World Cups and at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. She captained South Africa at the 2011 All-Africa Games. Mthembu also played for Kingdom Stars in the Premier Netball League. She captained Stars between 2019 and 2021. In 2015 and 2019, she was a members of the Stars teams that won Division Two Shield titles. In 2024, as a head coach, she guided South Africa to victory in a Netball World Youth Cup qualifying tournament and Kingdom Stars to a Division Two Shield title. Fran Williams
Francesca 'Fran' Williams (born 23 December 1997) is an English international netballer who currently plays for West Coast Fever in Suncorp Super Netball. With the England Roses she has won a silver and bronze medal at the Netball World Cup and she has four Netball Super League titles with Wasps Netball and Loughborough Lightning. Early life and education Williams started playing netball in her last year of primary school before joining Woodley Netball Club in Reading, Berkshire. Razia Quashie
Razia Quashie (born 16 September 1997) is a netball player who plays for England and the London Mavericks. She had her senior debut with the England national netball team in October 2018 in the Sunshine Series against Jamaica. Early life and education Quashie was born on the south Caribbean islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and played a range of sports as a child, crediting her mother for her interest in netball. She has a degree in Sports Science from Brunel University and also a Masters degree. Kate Shimmin
Kate Walsh (née Shimmin; born in 1992) is an Australian netball player, most recently in the Suncorp Super Netball league, playing for the Sunshine Coast Lightning. In August 2019, Jess Thirlby the new England Roses Coach announced Shimmin would join the full time England Roses programme. Shimmin grew up in South Australia and was a part of the South Australian Institute of Sport Volleyball program before being offered a SASI Netball scholarship which she chose over volleyball. When she finished High School she moved to Canberra where she developed her skills at the Australian Institute of Sport. Stacey Francis-Bayman ( Francis, born 1 January 1988) is a former England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. Laura Malcolm (born 20 May 1991) is an English netball player and co-captain of the national team. At club level, she plays for Mainland Tactix in the ANZ Premiership, and has previously played for Netball Superleague teams Manchester Thunder and Severn Stars. Sophie Drakeford-Lewis
Sophie Drakeford-Lewis (born 10 December 1998) is an English netball player who most recently played for Surrey Storm and has represented the national team. She has previously played for Saracens Mavericks and Team Bath, and was awarded the Young Player of the Season Award for the 2019 Netball Superleague season.
