2019 Selby District Council Election
The 2019 Selby District Council election was held on 2 May 2019 to elect members of Selby District Council in England. It was the final election to the authority before its dissolution in 2023, and subsequent subsumption into the unitary North Yorkshire Council. The election saw the Conservative Party maintain overall control of the District Council with a reduced majority. The election was noted for the surprise success of the Yorkshire Party, who won four seats on the council, which remains their best performance to date in a local authority election. However, two of the four councillors elected for the party would rejoin the Conservative Party the following year, a third would resign with their seat being won by the Conservatives in the ensuing by-election, while the fourth would eventually join the Labour Party, leaving the Yorkshire Party with no representation on the council by 2022. Selby District is a local government district of North Yorkshire, England. The local authority, Selby District Council, is based in the town of Selby. The Local Authority had a population of 83,449 at the 2011 Census. The southernmost district of North Yorkshire, it borders the City of York unitary authority, the Borough of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, the City of Leeds and City of Wakefield districts in West Yorkshire, the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, and the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Yorkshire Party
The Yorkshire Party is a regionalist political party in Yorkshire, a historic county of England. Founded in 2014, it campaigns for the establishment of a devolved Yorkshire Parliament within the UK, with powers over education, environment, transport and housing. North Yorkshire Council
North Yorkshire Council is a future unitary local authority in England covering most of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. The new authority was approved by Parliament on 17 March 2022, and elections to the new council took place on 5 May 2022. North Yorkshire County Council
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) is the county council governing the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire; an area composing most of North Yorkshire in England. Wendy Ruth Nichols, Baroness Nichols of Selby is a British politician, trade unionist and life peer. Early life Nichols is from Selby in North Yorkshire. Career Nichols is UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Convenor and Branch Secretary. A child of two Labour councillors, she served as a Labour councillor herself for the Selby North ward on Selby District Council from 1999 to the council's abolition in 2023. Her election to the council came as a result of a challenge to the High Court after she had initially being declared as having lost, due to a counting error. 2022 North Yorkshire Council Election
The 2022 North Yorkshire Council election took place on 5 May 2022, alongside the other local elections. These will be the last elections to North Yorkshire County Council, and the elected councillors will also serve as the first councillors on the North Yorkshire Council (a new unitary authority), which will replace the existing county council in April 2023.
