2019 Grand Rapids Mayoral Election
The 2019 Grand Rapids mayoral election took place on November 5, 2019, to elect the mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This was the last election for mayor to take place in an odd-year after Grand Rapids voters approved Prop 1 in 2020, which moved city elections to even years, 57% to 43%. Incumbent Rosalynn Bliss faced a challenge from Daniel Allen Schutte, a local pastor and candidate for the Michigan's 75th House of Representatives district, 75th District of Michigan House of Representatives. Bliss defeated Schutte in a landslide, securing a second term as mayor. Rosalynn Bliss
Rosalynn Bliss (born August 3, 1975) is an American politician, social worker, and mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first woman to be elected mayor of Michigan's second-largest city, Bliss took office on January 1, 2016. She has served on the Grand Rapids City Commission since 2006. Rosalynn is a member of the Democratic Party. Early Life, Personal Life, and Education Rosalynn Bliss comes from a large family of six brothers and three sisters. Her father was a brick mason while her mother worked at a local grocery store. Rosalynn grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Sault Ste. Marie and graduated from Sault Area High School in 1993. Shortly after, she moved to Mobile, Alabama where she attended the University of South Alabama earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice in 1997. Michigan House Of Representatives
The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. There are 110 members, each of whom is elected from constituencies having approximately 77,000 to 91,000 residents, based on population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Its composition, powers and duties are established in Article IV of the Michigan Constitution. Members are elected in even-numbered years and take office at 12 p.m. (EST) on January 1 following the November general election. Concurrently with the Michigan Senate, the House first convenes on the second Wednesday in January, according to the state constitution. Each member is limited to serving three terms of two years. 2019 United States Mayoral Elections
The 2019 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. This off-year election included gubernatorial elections in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi; regularly-scheduled state legislative elections in Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and New Jersey; and special elections for seats in various state legislatures. Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Three special elections to the United States House of Representatives also took place in 2019 as a result of vacancies. Democrats regained the governorship of Kentucky and held the office in Louisiana, despite strong campaign efforts by President Donald Trump for the Republican candidates.
