Javelin Throw
The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown as far as possible. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong (''Amentum, ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', a leather strap around the shaft, so when they released the javelin, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. The European Athletics U23 Championships is a biennial Sport of athletics, athletics competition for European athletes Under 23 (athletics), under the age of 23, which is organized by the European Athletic Association. The oldest of the 'age-group' track and field events held by European Athletics – European Athletics U20 Championships (previously called 'Junior Championships') are held in the same odd numbered years, while the European Athletics U18 Championships, previously the 'Youth Championships' are held in even numbered years. Toni Tuomas Keränen (born 16 June 1998) is a Finnish javelin thrower. He is two-time Finnish Athletics Championships medallist, the Finnish national record holder in the U18 javelin throw, and he has represented Finland at the World Athletics Championships and other international competitions. Biography Keränen won the under-18 Finnish national championship in 2015 with a result of 81.39 m, which was nearly three meters better than the winning result of the same year's under-18 World Championships. In August 2015, Keränen threw a new Finnish record for his age group of 83.29 m in his hometown. He placed tenth at the Grosseto under-20 European Championships in 2017. Keränen won the silver medal at the 2018 Finnish Athletics Championships with a result of 78.86 m. Keränen's first global championship was at the Eugene World Championships in 2022.
