The 2018 Thurrock Council elections took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. Councillors in 16 out of the 20 electoral wards were to be up for election. The council remained under no overall control, with a minority Conservative administration running the council. On 26 January 2018, all sitting UKIP councillors resigned from the party and formed a new opposition group called Thurrock Independents. On 13 March 2018, Basildon UKIP announced that they had taken over responsibility for the 6 East Thurrock wards and are now called UKIP Basildon and Thurrock Branch. Before the elections, there was a by-election held in Ockendon which resulted in a Conservative gain after a tie and drawing of lots. 2016 Thurrock Council Election
The 2016 Thurrock Council election took place on 5 May 2016 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The council remained under no overall control. The Labour leader of the council, John Kent, resigned at the subsequent annual meeting of the council. The leader of the Conservative group, Rob Gledhill, was elected leader of the council instead. 2019 Thurrock Council Election
The 2019 Thurrock Council election was held on 2 May 2019 to elect members of the Thurrock Council in England. Election A third of the seats were elected on 2 May 2019. Prior to the election, the council was under no overall control, governed by a minority Conservative administration. They held 23 of 49 seats, while Labour held 17 seats, followed by the Thurrock Independents on 9 seats. Elections were held in a total of sixteen wards, with Conservative, Labour, and Thurrock Independent candidates standing in each ward. UKIP stood two candidates. The Green Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the British Union & Sovereignty Party stood one candidate each in Chafford & North Stifford, Grays Riverside, and Belhus respectively. Thurrock Council
Thurrock Council is the local authority for the borough of Thurrock in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. Since 1998 the council has been a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. The council is based in Grays. In 2022 the council's level of debt arising from failed investments led to it issuing a Section 114 notice, being the local authority equivalent of declaring bankruptcy. The government directed neighbouring Essex County Council to take over Thurrock's finances and also appointed a new managing director for the council. 2014 Thurrock Council Election
Elections to Thurrock Council were held on 22 May 2014. The UK Independence Party gained five seats, three from the Conservatives and two from Labour. Of the sixteen wards contested, Labour won six, the UKIP five and the Conservatives five. The council went from Labour-controlled to no overall control. Tim Aker
Timür Mark "Tim" Aker (born 23 May 1985) is a British politician who was a Member of the European Parliament for the East of England region. He was elected as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate in 2014. He was head of UKIP's Policy Unit from August 2013 to January 2015, and was UKIP's candidate for the Thurrock constituency in the 2015 general election, coming third in a close 3-way election. Aker left UKIP and joined the Thurrock Independents where he also successfully sought election a councillor in 2018, before later joining the Brexit Party. Early life Aker was born in Orsett to a Turkish father and an English mother, and grew up in Aveley. He attended Havering Sixth Form College. He went on to study at the University of Nottingham, graduating with a BA in History and Politics. David Van Day
David Van Day (born David Paul Day, 28 November 1956) is an English singer, songwriter and politician who was formerly a member of the pop vocal duo Dollar. He was also in the 1970s vocal group Guys 'n' Dolls (with his Dollar partner Thereza Bazar), and two latter-day line-ups of Bucks Fizz in the 1990s and 2000s. Biography Van Day was born David Paul Day on 28 November 1956 in Brighton, Sussex, England. Having been a member of song-and-dance troupe The Young Generation, in 1974 he successfully auditioned for the then-new vocal group Guys 'n' Dolls. The group had a few hits, and Van Day began a romantic relationship with bandmate Thereza Bazar. Keen to embark on a solo career, Van Day was sacked from the band in 1977, as was Bazar shortly afterwards. Van Day and Bazar then decided to perform together, and formed a new duo, Dollar. Thurrock Independents
The Thurrock Independents, also known as the Thurrock Independents Party (TIP), was a localist and populist British political party based in Thurrock, Essex, England. It was formed in January 2018 when seventeen Thurrock councillors, including then-East of England MEP Tim Aker, broke-away from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) after claiming to have grown disillusioned with party politics. At its height in 2018, the party was Thurrock Council's official opposition group and had two members in the European Parliament. It declined after multiple defections and election defeats and was left with only one councillor after the 2023 elections. The party disbanded later that year.
