2018 Exeter City Council Election
The 2018 Exeter City Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect a third (13/39) of the members of Exeter City Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The election result left the council with the same political make up as it had before the election, with Labour in control with 29 seats and the Conservatives as the main opposition party, returning with 8. Background At the previous election in 2016 election, Labour remained in control of the council with 30 councillors out of 39. In February 2017, Labour Councillor Chris Musgrave defected to the Green Party, leaving them with 29 seats going into the election. Exeter City Council
Exeter City Council is the council and local government of the city of Exeter, Devon. History Proposed unitary authority status The government proposed that the city should become an independent unitary authority within Devon, much like neighbouring Plymouth and Torbay. The statutory orders to set up the unitary authority were passed in Parliament and a new unitary city council was due to start in Exeter on 1 April 2011. However, following the 2010 general election the new government announced in May 2010 that the reorganisation would be blocked. Boundaries The Local Government Boundary Commission for England published its final recommendations in September 2015 for changes to the wards in Exeter. The aim was to reduce the city's high levels in electoral inequality. The number of wards was reduced to 13; each electing three councillors for a total of 39. 2018 United Kingdom Local Elections
Council elections in England were held on Thursday 3 May 2018. Elections were held in all 32 London boroughs, 34 metropolitan boroughs, 67 district and borough councils and 17 unitary authorities. There were also direct elections for the mayoralties of Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Watford. With the exception of those areas that have had boundary changes, the seats up for election were last contested in the 2014 local elections. A parliamentary by-election in West Tyrone took place the same day. Various other local by-elections also took place. 2016 Exeter City Council Election
The 2016 Exeter City Council election took place on 5 May 2016, to elect members of Exeter City Council in England. Following boundary changes, the entire council was up for election, and all 13 wards were contested, each electing three councillors. The election was held concurrently with other local elections held in England on the 5 May. The council had been controlled by the Labour Party since 1990, which had held an outright majority since 2012. Labour won the Exeter election, extending their control to 30 seats, their highest ever share of the vote. The Conservatives came in second place with eight seats, losing four to Labour, while the Liberal Democrats won a single seat. The election for the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner was also scheduled for the 5 May.
