2017–18 Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Texas Longhorns men's basketball team represented the University of Texas at Austin in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They were led by third-year head coach Shaka Smart and played their home games at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas as members of the Big 12 Conference. They finished the season 19–15, 8–10 in 2017–18 Big 12 Conference men's basketball season, Big 12 play to finish in seventh place. They defeated 2017–18 Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball team, Iowa State in the first round of the 2018 Big 12 men's basketball tournament, Big 12 tournament before losing to 2017–18 Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball team, Texas Tech in the quarterfinals. Shaka Smart
Shaka Dingani Smart (born April 8, 1977) is an American men's college basketball coach and former college basketball player. He is the current head men's basketball coach at Marquette University. Smart rose to prominence in 2011 after leading Virginia Commonwealth University to its first and only Final Four appearance in school history in the 2011 NCAA tournament. Early life, education, and playing career Smart was born April 8, 1977, in Madison, Wisconsin to Winston Smart and Monica King. Smart's father was not supportive of Smart and left the family in 1994. He grew up in Fitchburg and attended Oregon High School in Oregon, Wisconsin. Smart, who is biracial, was one of "10 or so" students of color at Oregon High and experienced racism while attending the school. The 2016–17 Big 12 men's basketball season is the ongoing 21st season of basketball for the Big 12 Conference. Team practices began in October 2016, and were followed by the start of the regular season on November 11. Conference play began on December 30, 2016 and will conclude with the 2017 Big 12 men's basketball tournament, beginning March 8, 2017 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Elijah Mitrou-Long
Elijah Isa Mitrou-Long (born December 15, 1996) is a Canadian–Greek professional basketball player for Pallacanestro Varese of the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played college basketball for Mount St. Mary's, Texas, and UNLV. Early life Mitrou-Long grew up in Mississauga, Ontario. He played football and hockey but focused his attention on basketball. At the age of 15, he enrolled at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, Maryland, and lived with a host family. As a junior, he averaged 10 points, four rebounds and four assists per game. Jarrett Allen (born April 21, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Tevin Stanvontae Mack (born May 1, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for the Al-Ittihad Jeddah of the Saudi Basketball League (SBL).
