The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is a professional ice hockey independent minor league based in Huntersville, North Carolina, with teams located primarily in the southeastern United States as well as Illinois and Indiana in the midwestern United States. Following the 2021-22 season, the Peoria Rivermen are the reigning President's Cup champions. As of 2022, the Knoxville Ice Bears are the most successful team in SPHL history, having won five William B. Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs
The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs are a professional ice hockey team and a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Based in Roanoke, Virginia, the Rail Yard Dawgs play their home games at Berglund Center. History The Rail Yard Dawgs are the fifth professional hockey team to call the Roanoke Valley home, following the Roanoke Valley Rebels of the Eastern Hockey League and later the Southern Hockey League (1967–1976), the Virginia Lancers/ Roanoke Valley Rebels/Rampage (1983–1993) and the Roanoke Express of the East Coast Hockey League (1993–2004), and the Roanoke Valley Vipers of the United Hockey League ( 2005–2006). Forward (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, a forward is a player, and a position on the ice, whose primary responsibility is to score and assist goals. Generally, the forwards try to stay in three different lanes of the ice going from goal to goal. It is not mandatory, however, to stay in a lane. Staying in a lane aids in forming the common offensive strategy known as a triangle. One forward obtains the puck and then the forwards pass it between themselves making the goalie move side to side. This strategy opens up the net for scoring opportunities. This strategy allows for a constant flow of the play, attempting to maintain the control of play by one team in the offensive zone. The forwards can pass to the defence players playing at the blue line, thus freeing up the play and allowing either a shot from the point (blue line position where the defence stands) or a pass back to the offence. Defenceman
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). They were once called cover-point. In regular play, two defencemen complement three forwards and a goaltender on the ice. Goaltender
In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goaltender mostly plays in or near the area in front of the net called the '' goal crease'' (often referred to simply as '' the crease''). Goaltenders tend to stay at or beyond the top of the crease to cut down on the angle of shots. In the modern age of goaltending there are two common styles, butterfly and hybrid (hybrid is a mix of the traditional stand-up style and butterfly technique). Kevin Kerr (ice Hockey)
Kevin Kerr (born September 18, 1967) is a Canadian retired professional hockey player and former head coach of the Flint Generals of the United/International Hockey League. Career Kerr was drafted in the third round, 56th overall of the 1986 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. On February 4, 2015, Kerr was named the inaugural head coach of the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Professional Hockey League. The club played their first game in October 2015. In his second season as Macon's head coach he won the SPHL's coach of the year, and went on to win the league championship, giving Macon its first professional sports title since the 1962 Macon Peaches baseball team. Jeff Bes
Jeff Bes (born July 31, 1973) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played several seasons with the Laredo Bucks. Bes has played for many minor league teams such as the Dayton Bombers, Chicago Wolves, Mississippi Sea Wolves, Orlando Solar Bears, Jacksonville Lizard Kings, SaiPa and several other teams including the Dukes of Hamilton. He also coaches in the Southern Professional Hockey League. Playing career Junior Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Bes started playing hockey at age 2. He began his junior career in 1990–91, playing for the Dukes of Hamilton of the Ontario Hockey League. He would score 23 goals and 47 assists for 70 points. His time with Hamilton would be short lived as the following season they became the Guelph Storm. Jean-Guy Trudel
Jean-Guy Andre Trudel (born October 18, 1975) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger. He played five games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Phoenix Coyotes and the Minnesota Wild. Trudel is currently the head coach of the Peoria Rivermen in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). He is also in charge of the Peoria Youth Hockey Association. Playing career As a youth, Trudel played in the 1989 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Amos, Quebec. Peoria Civic Center
Peoria Civic Center is an entertainment complex located in downtown Peoria, Illinois. Designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Philip Johnson and John Burgee, it has an arena, theater, exhibit hall and meeting rooms. It opened in 1982 and completed an expansion to its lobby and meeting facilities in 2007. Mississippi RiverKings
The Mississippi RiverKings were a professional minor league ice hockey team. The RiverKings were a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League from 2011 to 2018 after playing their first nineteen seasons (1992–2011) in the Central Hockey League. On July 2, 2007, after 15 seasons as the Memphis RiverKings, the team's name was changed to Mississippi RiverKings. For their first eight seasons, the team played their home games in the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee. From 2000 to 2018, their home was the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, a suburb of Memphis. On June 13, 2011, it was announced the RiverKings had left the CHL to join the SPHL.
