2017–18 Akron Zips Men's Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Akron Zips men's basketball team represented the University of Akron during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Zips, led by first-year head coach John Groce, played their home games at the James A. Rhodes Arena as members of the East Division of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 14–18, 6–12 in MAC play to finish in last place in the East Division. In the 2018 MAC men's basketball tournament, MAC tournament, they defeated 2017–18 Western Michigan Broncos men's basketball team, Western Michigan in the first round before losing to 2017–18 Eastern Michigan Eagles men's basketball team, Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals. John Groce
John Gordon Groce (; born September 7, 1971) is an American college basketball coach, currently the head coach for the Akron Zips men's basketball team. Prior to coaching for Akron, he was the head coach at Illinois and Ohio. Coaching career Player and assistant coach Groce graduated from Taylor University, an NAIA Division II school in Upland, Indiana, in 1994 and played basketball for the school while he was there. Groce started his coaching career as an assistant with his alma mater, Taylor University, under Paul Patterson from 1993 to 1996. His next job was an assistant at North Carolina State under Herb Sendek from 1996 to 2000. He then moved on to Butler as an assistant to Thad Matta and was there just one season (2000–01). When Matta accepted the head coaching position at Xavier, Groce went with him and served as an assistant from 2001 to 2004, before moving again with Matta when he was named as the head coach of Ohio State. UD Arena
University of Dayton Arena (commonly known as UD Arena) is a 13,409-seat multi-purpose arena located in Dayton, Ohio. The arena opened in 1969. It is home to the University of Dayton Flyers basketball teams. From 2001 to 2010, the facility hosted the annual "play-in" game in the NCAA men's basketball tournament (officially the "opening round" game) which featured the teams rated 64th and 65th in the tournament field. Since 2011, when the tournament expanded to four opening-round games, the arena continued to host all "first four" games. Overall, the arena has hosted more men's NCAA Division I basketball tournament games than any other venue. The playing court is known as Blackburn Court, named after historic UD coach Tom Blackburn. The 2017–18 Dayton Flyers men's basketball team represented the University of Dayton during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Flyers were led by first-year head coach Anthony Grant and played their home games at the University of Dayton Arena as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. They finished the season 14–17, 8–10 in A-10 play to finish in ninth place. They lost in the second round of the A-10 tournament to VCU. Previous season The Flyers finished the 2016–17 season 24–8, 15–3 in A-10 play to win the regular season A-10 championship.
