2017 Portuguese Local Elections
Local elections were held in Portugal on 1 October 2017. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is automatically elected mayor, similar to first-past-the-post (FPTP), another election for the Municipal Assembly, as well an election for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner is elected parish president. This last election was held in the more than 3,000 parishes around the country. In the 2017 election, 13.3 percent of incumbent mayors, 41 to be precise, were barred from running for another term. The Socialist Party (PS) was the big winner of the elections consolidating their position as the largest local party in Portugal. The PS won 160 mayors, 10 more than in 2013, and more than 38 percent of the votes. Municipalities Of Portugal
The municipality ( or ) is the second-level Administrative divisions of Portugal, administrative subdivision of Portugal, as defined by the Constitution of Portugal, 1976 Constitution. As a general rule, each municipality is further subdivided into freguesia, parishes (''freguesias''); the municipalities in the north of the country usually have a higher number of parishes. Mirandela
Mirandela (), officially the City of Mirandela (), is a city and a municipality in northeastern Portugal. The city itself is contained by the Mirandela parish, which had a population of 11,397. The population of the municipality in 2021 was 21,384, in an area of 658.96 km2. Mirandela is famous for its cuisine, particularly the alheiras. A round of the European Jetski Championship is held on the Tua River every Summer. The city has two campuses of higher education institutions - one belonging to the public Bragança Polytechnic Institute and one belonging to the private Instituto Piaget. Rui Moreira (politician)
Rui de Carvalho de Araújo Moreira (born 8 August 1956) is a Portuguese businessman and politician, currently serving as Mayor of Porto since 2013. While officially an independent, he has been supported by the CDS – People's Party since 2013 and the Liberal Initiative since 2021. Biography Moreira was born in Porto. One of his great-grandfathers was Adolfo Höfle, a wealthy German migrant and employer of João Augusto Ferreira de Almeida, the last man executed by Portugal in 1917. Assunção Cristas
Maria de Assunção de Oliveira Cristas Machado da Graça (born 28 September 1974) is a Portuguese lawyer, professor and politician. She was the President of the CDS – People's Party from 2016 to 2020. Since 2017 she's also opposition leader councilwoman in the Lisbon City Council, elected with 21% of the popular vote. From 2011 to 2015, she served as Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Territorial Planning in the government led by Pedro Passos Coelho. Barreiro, Portugal
Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in the Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 78,345, in an area of . It is a region belonging to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Barreiro has a view of the city of Lisbon from Avenida da Praia and a riverside area called Alburrica. The mayor since 2017 has been Frederico Rosa, elected by the Socialist Party. Almada
Almada () is a city and a municipality in Portugal, located on the southern margin of the Tagus River, on the opposite side of the river from Lisbon. 2017 Lisbon Local Election
The 2017 Lisbon local election was held on 1 October 2017 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. Against a fractured opposition, Fernando Medina, mayor since the resignation of António Costa in 2015, was elected for a full term, defeating Assunção Cristas ( CDS-PP leader) and Teresa Leal Coelho ( PSD). Despite the victory, the Socialist Party lost its majority by one seat, having to rely of the Left Bloc's support. The Unitary Democratic Coalition presented former MEP João Ferreira again and achieved similar results, and that guaranteed two Communist councilors. The Left Bloc, with Ricardo Robles as the candidate for Mayor, managed to gain a councillor seat for the first time in 10 years.
