2017 IAAF World U18 Championships
The 2017 IAAF World Youth Championships in Athletics, IAAF World U18 Championships was the tenth and last edition of the biennial international Sport of athletics, athletics competition for Under-18 athletics, youth (under-18) athletes. The five-day competition took place between 12 and 16 July at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. Eligible athletes were aged 16 or 17 on 31 December 2017 (born in 2000 or 2001). South Africa topped the medals table with 11 medals, five of them gold, while host nation Kenya finished fourth with four gold and 15 medals in total. Retshidisitswe Mlenga
Retshidisitswe Mlenga (born 27 February 2000) is a South African track and field sprinter who competes in the 100 metres and 200 metres. He holds a personal best of 10.37 seconds for the 100 m and 20.88 seconds for the 200 m. He was the gold medallist in the 200 m at the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017. Mlenga won the South African high school titles in the 100 and 200 m in 2016, then was runner-up in those events at the South African junior championships, setting new bests of 10.45 and 20.96 seconds, respectively. The following year he returned and won both titles at the South African junior meet, earning himself a place on the international team for the 2017 World U18 Championships in Athletics. Stanley Mburu
Stanley Waithaka Mburu (born 9 April 2000) is a Kenyan male long-distance runner who competes in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres Mburu enjoyed his first international success at the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships, taking a bronze medal in the 3000 metres behind Ethiopia's Selemon Barega and Kenyan compatriot Edward Zakayo. The following year he made his debut on the 2018 IAAF Diamond League circuit, taking third in the 5000 metres with a personal best of 13:10.14 minutes. This time ranked him in the top twenty for the distance that year. At the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships he was again bested by Zakayo, making it a Kenyan 1–2 in the 5000 m final, while reigning U18 champion Selemon Barega finished out of the medals. Selemon Barega Shirtaga (born 20 January 2000) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver for the 5,000 metres at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Selemon is a two-time 3,000 metres World Indoor Championship medallist, taking silver in 2018, and gold in 2022.
