2016–17 WNBL Season
The 2016–17 WNBL season is the 37th season of competition since its establishment in 1981. The regular season begins on October 7, 2016 when the Sydney Uni Flames host the Perth Lynx and is scheduled to conclude on February 19, 2017. Townsville Fire were the two-time defending champions, but they were defeated by the Sydney Uni Flames in the Semifinals. The Flames would go on to take home their fourth WNBL title, their first in sixteen years, after defeating the Dandenong Rangers in the final. Women's National Basketball League
The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is a professional women's basketball list of basketball leagues, league in Australia composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the Women's sports, women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). History Founding of the WNBL In August 1980, West Adelaide Bearcat Coach Ted Owens (basketball), Ted Powell, after an encouraging exchange of letters with St Kilda'Coach Bill Palmer called a meeting at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel in Adelaide. Lauren Mansfield
Lauren Mansfield (born 18 December 1989) is an Australian professional basketball player. Career College Lauren played college basketball for two years at Midland College in Texas before strong showings earned her a transfer to Iowa State University to play for the Iowa State Cyclones in the Big 12 Conference where she was starting point guard. Sara Blicavs
Sara Blicavs (; born 15 February 1993) is an Australian professional basketball player. She played 15 seasons in the Women's National Basketball League between 2009 and 2024. Career Blicavs plays in the guard or forward positions. WNBL Blicavs began her career, playing for the Australian Institute of Sport. After a brief stint with the Dandenong Rangers, Blicavs moved to the Bendigo Spirit. There, she won her first WNBL championship. Kerryn Harrington
Kerryn Peterson (née Harrington, born 2 March 1992) is an Australian rules footballer and former basketballer. Peterson currently plays for the Carlton Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW), and previously played for the Bendigo Spirit, Australian Institute of Sport, Bulleen Boomers and Adelaide Lightning in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) between 2007 and 2017. Melbourne Boomers
Geelong United is an Australian professional basketball team based in Geelong, Victoria. United compete in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) and play their home games at Geelong Arena. Beginning as the Bulleen Boomers in 1984, the team underwent a name change in 2013 to Melbourne Boomers. In 2024, the Boomers' WNBL licence was transferred to Geelong United Basketball. Alice Kunek
Alice Kunek (born 6 January 1991) is an Australian-Irish professional basketball player for Southside Flyers, the current champions of the WNBL. Professional career WNBL Kunek began her WNBL career at the AIS alongside fellow up and coming players. She spent three seasons at the AIS, before moving signing with the Bulleen Boomers, where she played for three seasons. In her first season with the Boomers, she helped them take home their inaugural WNBL Championship, averaging 9.9 points per game. Laura Ann Hodges (née Summerton; born 13 December 1983) is an Australian female professional basketball player, having played in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), Europe, and the WNBA. Natalie Novosel (born November 22, 1989) is an American professional basketball player. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, she went to Lexington Catholic High School and played collegiately at Notre Dame. USA Basketball Novosel played on the team representing the US at the 2011 World University Games held in Shenzhen, China. The team, coached by Bill Fennelly, won all six games to earn the gold medal. Kelly Louise Wilson (born 1 January 1984) is an Australian professional basketball player. Early life Wilson was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and grew up in the Victorian country town of Leongatha. Allyson "Ally" Malott-McCarthy (born October 31, 1992) is an American former basketball player who played for the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
