An election was held on November 8, 2016 to elect 16 of the 33 members of Wisconsin's State Senate. The election coincided with elections for other offices, including U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and State Assembly. The primary election was held on August 9, 2016. Republicans consolidated their control of the Senate by gaining one seat, winning 9 seats compared to 7 seats for the Democrats. Wisconsin State Senate
The Wisconsin Senate is the upper house of the Wisconsin State Legislature. Together with the larger Wisconsin State Assembly they constitute the legislative branch of the state of Wisconsin. The powers of the Wisconsin Senate are modeled after those of the U.S. Senate. The Wisconsin Constitution ties the size of the State Senate to that of the Assembly, by limiting its size to no less than 1/4, nor more than 1/3, of the size of the Assembly. Currently, Wisconsin is divided into 33 Senate Districts (1/3 of the current Assembly membership of 99) apportioned throughout the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 33 senators. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is currently headed by chair Ben Wikler. Important issues for the state party include support for workers and unions, strong public education, and environmental protection.
