2015 Canning By-election
The 2015 Canning by-election was held for the Australian House of Representatives on Saturday 19 September from 8 am to 6 pm WST. The by-election in the seat of Canning was triggered by the death of sitting Liberal MP Don Randall on 21 July 2015. Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith issued the writ for the by-election on 17 August 2015. Due to the requirement that the by-election must be held with at least 33 days' notice, the date set for polling day was the earliest possible day for holding it: 19 September. The electoral roll in Canning closed on 24 August and candidate nominations closed on 27 August. Twelve candidates contested the election. The Division of Canning is an Australian Electoral Division in Western Australia. History The division was created in 1949 and is named for Alfred Canning, the Western Australian government surveyor who surveyed the Canning Stock Route. It was originally a country seat that traded hands between the two main centre-right parties, the Liberal and Country parties. Since 1980, it has been located in the southern suburbs of the two largest cities in Western Australia, Perth and Mandurah. Special Air Service Regiment
The Special Air Service Regiment, officially abbreviated SASR though commonly known as the SAS, is a special forces unit of the Australian Army. Formed in 1957 as a company, it was modelled on the British SAS with which it shares the motto, "Who Dares Wins". Expanded to a regiment in August 1964, it is based at Campbell Barracks, in Swanbourne, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, and is a direct command unit of the Special Operations Command. The Animal Justice Party (AJP) is a political party in Australia founded in 2009 by Steve Garlick. The party was registered by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on 3 May 2011. The Australian Defence Veterans Party (often shortened to Veterans Party) was a minor political party which formed in Australia in 2015 to advocate for military veterans. In November 2014, Senator Jacqui Lambie—then a member of the Palmer United Party, and an advocate for defence veterans and personnel, liked the proposed party's Facebook page, triggering an increase in membership enquiries and speculation that Lambie could join the ADVP, however she instead registered a separate party called the Jacqui Lambie Network on 14 May 2015.
