2014 Jersey General Election
General elections were held in Jersey on 15 October 2014 to elect the 49 members of the States Assembly which also coincided with a referendum on electoral reform. Electoral system At the time of the election, the 49 members of the States consisted of three different types of members. The 29 deputies were elected from 18 districts; nine districts elected one deputy, five districts elected two deputies, two districts elected three deputies, and two districts elected four deputies, with voters able to cast as many votes as there were seats in their district. The 12 constables were elected, one from each of the 12 parishes, whilst the eight senators are elected on an island-wide basis, with each voter casting up to eight votes. States Assembly
The States Assembly (; Jèrriais: ) is the parliament of Jersey, formed of the island's 37 deputies and the Connétable of each of the twelve parishes. The origins of the legislature of Jersey lie in the system of self-government according to Norman law guaranteed to the Channel Islands by John, King of England, following the division of Normandy in 1204. The States Assembly has exercised uncontested legislative powers since 1771, when the concurrent law-making power of the Royal Court of Jersey was abolished. The Assembly passes and amends laws and regulations; approves the annual budget and taxation; appoints the chief minister, ministers and members of various committees and panels; debates matters proposed by the Council of Ministers, by individual States Members or by one of the committees or panels. Lyndon Farnham
Lyndon John Farnham is a Jersey politician who has served as the Chief Minister of Jersey since January 2024. He formerly served as the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport, and Culture. He has been a Deputy for St Mary, St Ouen & St Peter since 2022, having previously served as a Deputy for St Saviour and later a Senator. He is a business consultant and a company director. On 25 January 2024, Farnham was voted Chief Minister-designate by the States Assembly. He became the sixth Chief Minister of Jersey following the appointment of the new Council of Ministers on 30 January. Alan Simon Crowcroft is a Jersey politician, Connétable of St Helier, and former teacher. He has been an elected member of the States of Jersey since 1996. Background Crowcroft is the son of zoologists Peter Crowcroft and Gillian Godfrey. He was educated at Canford School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, and received a Diploma in Education from Westminster College, Oxford. After a career in teaching English in Oxford and Jersey, he founded the Jersey School of English in 1991. He is married with five children.
