2013 Chadian Coup Attempt
The 2013 Chadian coup d'état attempt was an attempted coup d'état against Chadian President Idriss Déby. Clashes in military barracks to the east of the capital N'Djamena, as well as in residential areas in the capital, occurred on the afternoon of May 1. During the clashes, which lasted for one day, between four and eight people were killed. Moussa Tao Mahamat, a former rebel leader, was accused of being the leader of the coup d'état attempt. He was arrested one day after the unsuccessful coup attempt. Following its conclusion, four MPs, two generals, one journalist, and several members of military were arrested on charges of participating in the coup attempt. This is a list of heads of state of Chad since the country gained independence from France in 1960 to the present day. A total of six people have served as head of state of Chad (not counting two Interim Heads of State). Additionally, one person, Goukouni Oueddei, has served on two non-consecutive occasions. Idriss Déby Itno ( '; 18 June 1952 – 20 April 2021) was a Chadian politician and military officer who was the sixth List of heads of state of Chad, president of Chad from 1991 until his death in 2021 during the 2021 Northern Chad offensive, Northern Chad offensive.
