After the six qualifying heats, the fastest rider in each heat advanced to the second round. The riders that did not advance to the second round, raced in six repechage heats. The first rider in each heat advanced to the second round along with the eight that qualified before. The first three riders from each of the two second round heats advanced to the final and the remaining riders raced a consolation 7–12 final. Teunis ("Teun") Mulder (born 18 June 1981) is a Dutch track cyclist. He is a former keirin World Champion and won a silver in the team sprint with Theo Bos and Tim Veldt. Mulder also won four world cup classics in the team sprint and keirin. He competed for his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, finishing 10th at the individual sprint, 6th at the team sprint (with Theo Bos and Jan Bos) and 11th at the 1 km time trial, while he was eliminated in the first repechage round of the keirin competition. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the men's keirin. Mulder was appointed as a member of the inaugural UCI Athletes' Commission in 2011. Scott Sunderland (born 16 March 1988) is an Australian professional racing cyclist, who last rode for UCI Continental team . Sunderland has represented Australia at the World Cup events including at Los Angeles in 2008, where he won the 1 km time trial and at Manchester in 2009. He is an Australian Institute of Sport and Western Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. His aunt, Jenny Sunderland, competed at the 1972 Munich Olympics in gymnastics. Edward James Dawkins (born 11 July 1989) is a New Zealand track cyclist. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games he won the silver medal in the men's sprint and the bronze medal in the men's 1 kilometre time trial. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he won the bronze medal in the men's sprint, and was part of the New Zealand time that won the gold medal in the team sprint, with Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster. The team sprint team set two Commonwealth Games records along the way. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won alongside Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell a silver medal in the team sprint, but did not go beyond the round 1 repechage in the individual sprint.
