2011 Jamaican General Election
General elections were held in Jamaica on 29 December 2011. The elections were contested mainly between the nation's two major political parties, the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), led by Andrew Holness, and the Portia Simpson-Miller-led opposition People's National Party (PNP). The result was a landslide victory for the PNP which won 42 of the 63 seats, a two-thirds majority. Background Since the 2007 Jamaican general election, previous elections in 2007, the number of seats had been increased from 60 (an even number) to 63 (an odd number). The close results of the 2007 general election spurred the change as the Electoral Commission concluded that a tie would not be resolved. Opinion polls Opinion polls indicated a slim lead for the opposition PNP six days before the election. The win by the PNP shocked even its leaders, such as Peter Phillips who said that "the results certainly exceeded our most optimistic scenarios". The Parliament of Jamaica () is the legislature, legislative branch of the government of Jamaica. Officially, they are known as the Houses of Parliament. Joan Gordon-Webley
Joan Gordon-Webley is a Jamaican politician. She has been a member of both houses of the Parliament of Jamaica. Early life Joan Gordon-Webley was born in Pell River, Hanover Parish. Political career In the 1980 Jamaican general election, she became the youngest woman to be elected to the House of Representatives, at the age of 28. Her opponent Roy McGann was killed. She returned to politics in 2006 and contested Saint Andrew South Eastern. In the 2011 Jamaican general election, she stood in Saint Andrew East Rural and lost to Damion Crawford by just over 300 votes. In 2014, she joined the People's National Party. Damion Crawford
Damion O. Crawford (born c. 1980) is a Jamaican politician. He represented Saint Andrew East in the parliament. Background and education Crawford was born in Haddo, Westmoreland Parish. Crawford attended Kingston College and the University of the West Indies, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in tourism management. While completing his master's degree, Crawford served as president of the university's Guild of Students. Political career Crawford was elected a member of parliament representing Saint Andrew East Rural in December 2011. He concurrently served as Jamaican minister of state for tourism and entertainment. Peter Phillips (politician)
Peter Phillips OJ (born 28 December 1949) is a Jamaican politician who has served as the MP for Saint Andrew East Central since 1993. Phillips is the former president of the People's National Party and former leader of the Opposition in Jamaica. He served as Minister of Finance and Planning of Jamaica from 2012 to 2016. He is member of parliament for East Central St Andrew. Early life Phillips was born in Kingston to Mico Teachers' College lecturer Aubrey Sylvester Phillips and civil servant Thelma Limonius Phillips. Aubrey was a graduate of Mico, where he had roomed with Howard Cooke, who would later become Governor-General of Jamaica. Phillip Paulwell
Phillip Paulwell (born 14 January 1962) is a Jamaican politician. Paulwell is the current Member of Parliament for the constituency of Kingston East and Port Royal and former Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining STEM in the People's National Party administration, which has formed the Government of Jamaica following the party's electoral victory in the December 2011 General Elections.
