2010 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2010. Nine entities contested the election, including several coalitions. Pre-election polls suggested a share of 41% of the vote going to the "Mega Combination" coalition that includes the National Democratic Party of former dictator Dési Bouterse. The ruling Nieuw Front (NF) had around 22.5% support. There were 324,490 people registered to vote in the election which would determine the holders of 51 parliament seats, 116 regional positions and 752 municipal positions. Results Preliminary results issued on 26 May 2010 showed the Mega Combination winning a plurality of 23 seats, up from 15 in the last election. The New Front for Democracy and Development alliance of incumbent President Ronald Venetiaan (who had stated before the election that he would not seek another term) was said to have won 14 seats. 2005 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2005. The governing New Front for Democracy and Development of president Ronald Venetiaan lost seats, remaining the largest party but failing to get a majority in the National Assembly of Suriname. Despite this Venetiaan was re-elected as president after obtaining sufficient support to win a majority in the election for president. Background Suriname became independent from the Netherlands in 1975 and in 1980 a coup brought the military to power. By 1982 Desi Bouterse had become head of state and remained in effective control of Suriname until international pressure led to a return to democracy in 1991. Elections In Suriname
Suriname elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by an electoral college based on the parliament. The National Assembly (''Nationale Assemblée'') has 51 members, elected every five years by proportional representation per district. Suriname has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. Ruth Wijdenbosch
Ruth Jeanette Wijdenbosch (born 18 June 1947) is a Surinamese politician. She served as a member of the National Assembly of Suriname from 1987 until 2015, on behalf of the National Party of Suriname. Biography Wijdenbosch was raised in Zanderij, a village 40 kilometers from Paramaribo. She studied law at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, but had to interrupt her studies for a long time in 1980 because the university was closed due to the Sergeants' Coup and the December murders. She graduated from the university in 1989. During this period she worked at the Vervuurts Bank (later known as Hakrinbank). In 1987, she entered politics and joined the National Party of Suriname (NPS). She founded the local branch ''De Nieuwe Horizon'' among others, of which she became chairwoman. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons ( Simons; born 5 September 1953) is a Surinamese politician. She served as Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Suriname between 2010 and 2020, becoming the second female chairman of the Surinamese Parliament. In 2024, she became the leader of the National Democratic Party. Biography Simons was first elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1996, representing the district of Paramaribo. She served as one of the vice-chairpersons of the National Democratic Party, which was founded by Dési Bouterse. She was leader of the parliamentary fraction from 2000 until 2006.
