2010 New York State Comptroller Election
The New York comptroller election of 2010 involved the first election campaign of Democrat Thomas DiNapoli to the Office of State Comptroller. DiNapoli was appointed as Comptroller by a joint session of the New York State Legislature on February 7, 2007. In the general election on November 2, 2010, DiNapoli defeated Republican nominee Harry Wilson to be elected to his first full term in office. However, he significantly underperformed every other Democrat on the ballot for statewide office. Thomas DiNapoli
Thomas Peter DiNapoli II (born February 10, 1954) is an American politician serving as the 54th and current New York State Comptroller since 2007. A member of the Democratic Party, he was previously the New York State Assemblyman for the 16th district, first elected in 1986. DiNapoli was elected by the New York State Legislature as New York State Comptroller on February 7, 2007; he was formerly the Chairman of the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. He is a resident of the village of Thomaston, Nassau County, New York (on Long Island). In November 2014, he won reelection, leading the statewide ticket with the most votes. He was easily reelected to a fourth term in November 2018, receiving 64.9% of the vote. Harry J. Wilson (born October 25, 1971) is an American businessman, former investor and turnaround expert who has served in the U.S. Treasury Department under President Barack Obama and on the 2009 Auto Industry Task Force. Wilson filed for office on February 16, 2010, running unopposed for the Republican primary for New York State Comptroller. He was defeated by incumbent Democrat Thomas DiNapoli in the general election on November 2, 2010. On February 22, 2022, Wilson announced his candidacy for Governor of New York in the 2022 election, he lost the Republican primary, coming in last with 14.7% of the vote. The New York State Comptroller is an elected constitutional officer of the U.S. state of New York and head of the New York state government's Department of Audit and Control. The New York State Comptroller is the highest-paid state auditor or treasurer in the country. Sixty-one individuals have held the office of State Comptroller since statehood. Julia Willebrand is an American environmental, peace and education activist and was the Green Party nominee for the office of Comptroller of the State of New York in the 2006 New York state elections. Biography Julia was born in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, and currently resides in Manhattan. She has been active in New York City local government as a member of the Manhattan Citizens' Solid Waste Advisory Board from 1994 to 1999 and as Chair of that board 1997 to 1999. She is also a past chair of both the Solid Waste Committee of the NYC Sierra Club and the International Working Group of the Green Party USA. The 2006 New York Comptroller Election took place on November 7, 2006 with the incumbent, Alan Hevesi winning against Republican challenger Chris Callaghan. Hevesi was plagued by scandals during the campaign involving misuse of state funds. Hevesi won the election, resigning a few days before his second term would have begun. The 2014 New York Comptroller election took place on November 4, 2014, to elect the New York State Comptroller. Incumbent Democratic Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli was re-elected to a second full term in office. Background Incumbent Democratic Comptroller Alan Hevesi was re-elected to a second term in 2006 but resigned a few days before the term would have begun, as part of a plea agreement from charges relating to his use of state employees to chauffeur his wife, who was ill (Hevesi had been convicted before the election but still defeated Christopher Callaghan by 56% to 39%). He was succeeded as Comptroller by Democratic State Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli, who was elected in a joint session of the New York State Legislature in February 2007.
