2009–10 WNBL Season
The 2009–10 WNBL season was the 30th season of competition since its establishment in 1981. A total of 10 teams contested the league. The regular season was played between October 2009 and March 2010, followed by a post-season involving the top five in March 2010. The Canberra Capitals were the defending champions and they successfully defended their title with a 75–70 win over the Bulleen Boomers in the Grand Final. Broadcast rights were held by free-to-air network ABC. ABC broadcast one game a week, at 1:00PM at every standard time in Australia. Molten provided equipment including the official game ball, with Hoop2Hoop supplying team apparel. Women's National Basketball League
The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is a professional women's basketball list of basketball leagues, league in Australia composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the Women's sports, women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). History Founding of the WNBL In August 1980, West Adelaide Bearcat Coach Ted Owens (basketball), Ted Powell, after an encouraging exchange of letters with St Kilda'Coach Bill Palmer called a meeting at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel in Adelaide. In attendance were Ted, North Adelaide Coach Kay McFarlane and Noarlunga Coach Brendan Flynn. Australian Institute Of Sport (WNBL Team)
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), known as AIS Pumas in the 1980s, competed in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) for 32 seasons. They were an inaugural team in the WNBL in 1981 and won a WNBL championship in the 1998–99 season. After winning just eight games in four seasons, the team was withdrawn from the WNBL following the 2011–12 season. Jenna O'Hea
Jenna O'Hea (born 6 June 1987) is a former Australian professional basketball player and former captain of Australia's national team, the Opals. O'Hea was the captain of the Australian Women's basketball team (Opals) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Opals were eliminated after losing to the USA in the quarterfinals. Basketball career Junior Basketball O'Hea played for the Nunawading Spectres at junior level, and represented her home state of Victoria at the U16, U18 and U20 levels. Deanna Smith
Deanna Smith (born 24 December 1980) is an Australian basketball coach and former player. She played the majority of her career in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), winning two WNBL championships and earning three WNBL All-Star Five honours. She also played wheelchair basketball in the Women's National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL), becoming the first player to play in both the WNBL and WNWBL. Early life Smith was born in Bendigo, Victoria. She represented Country Victoria at U16 (1995) and U18 (1996 and 1997) Australian Junior Championships, winning in 1996 and 1997 and captaining in 1997. She was All Australian in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Elizabeth Folake "Liz" Cambage ( ; born 18 August 1991) is a British-born Australian professional basketball player for the Sichuan Yuanda of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association. She won the Women's National Basketball League in 2011 and 2014 and the Women's Chinese Basketball Association championship in 2024. The All-WNBL Team is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) honour bestowed on the best performing players in the league following every WNBL season. Tom Maher
Tom Maher (born 4 September 1952 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian basketball coach. Maher is the most successful coach in history of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), having won nine championships. He coached the Nunawading Spectres to six titles, before leading Perth, Canberra and Bulleen to one apiece. He was named WNBL Coach of the Year in 1987, 1992, 2010 and 2011. Maher led the Australia women's national basketball team to their first Olympic medal (bronze) in 1996 and then on to silver at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He was head coach of New Zealand in Athens 2004, and coached the Tall Ferns to their best-ever performance of eighth. Rachael Flanagan
Rachael McCully (née Flanagan; born 5 April 1982) is one of Australia's most accomplished female basketballers. During a decorated WNBL career, McCully played for the Adelaide Lightning, Dandenong Rangers and Townsville Fire, earning the WNBL's Robyn Maher Defensive Player of Year award in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. She played her 324th and final WNBL game in the 2014/15 WNBL Grand Final as she led the Townsville Fire to their inaugural championship. The WNBL Defensive Player of the Year Award is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) award given since the 1990 WNBL season to the best defensive player throughout the regular season. Tayla Roberts
Tayla Roberts (born 16 February 1993) is an Australian professional basketball boomerang. Professional career WNBL Roberts began her professional career in 2009, for the Australian Institute of Sport. She would later to go on to receive the WNBL Rookie of the Year Award. Roberts has spent time with a range of WNBL teams in her young career. After the AIS, Roberts was signed by the then defending champions, Bulleen Boomers. She then had a one-season stint with the Sydney Uni Flames. After a one-year absence, she then signed with the defending champions in the Bendigo Spirit.
