2009 Montserratian General Election
General elections were held in Montserrat on 8 September 2009, two years earlier than constitutionally necessary. The Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) gained a parliamentary majority with six of the nine seats, while the outgoing Chief Minister, Lowell Lewis (formerly of the Montserrat Democratic Party but campaigning as an independent), and two other independent (politician), independents won the other seats. Reuben Meade of the MCAP was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 September 2009. Montserrat ( , ) is a British Overseas Territories, British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish diaspora, Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Donaldson Romeo
Donaldson Romeo (born 1962) is a Montserratian politician. He is currently a member of the Legislative Assembly and served as the island's Premier from September 2014 until November 2019. Having formerly worked as an artist and a journalist, he was first elected to parliament as an independent candidate in 2011. Biography Romeo was born in Salem, Montserrat in 1962. Elections in Montserrat take place within the framework of a multi-party democracy and a parliamentary system. The Legislative Assembly is directly elected, and a Chief Minister is selected by the party or coalition with the most seats in the Assembly. Electoral history Elections were held in Montserrat in the 19th century, but with a severely limited franchise; in 1837 only 114 of the 7,119 residents of the island were eligible to vote. The partially elected Legislative Assembly dissolved itself in 1866 and was replaced with a wholly appointed body, which remained in place until 1937 when constitutional reforms reintroduced elected members. The reorganised legislature had nine seats; four elected, three held by government officials and two by nominees appointed by the Governor. Adelina Tuitt
Adelina E. Tuitt is a Montserratian politician who served in the Legislative Council of Montserrat from 1996 until 2001. She was the territory's Minister of Health, Education, and Community Services, in the wake of the volcanic eruptions of the 1990s, which devastated the southern half of the island. A member of the Movement for National Reconstruction party, Tuitt represented the Eastern constituency. Biography In 1993, prior to entering elected office, Adelina Tuitt was the public relations officer for the government of Montserrat. Margaret Annie Dyer-Howe (; 18 November 1941 – 6 April 2019) was a Montserratian politician and businesswoman, who was the second woman to be appointed as a government minister in the Legislative Assembly of Montserrat. She held a number of ministries during her two periods as an elected representative, including as Minister for Education and Social Affairs, Minister for Trade, Agriculture, Lands, Housing and the Environment and Minister of Finance. The Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) is a political party in Montserrat. History The party was established in 2005 as a successor to the National Progressive Party. In the 2006 elections it received 36.1% of the vote, winning four seats. Although it was the largest party in the Legislative Council, a coalition government was formed by the Montserrat Democratic Party (MDP), the New People's Liberation Movement (NPLM) and an independent MP. In the 2009 elections, the MCAP won six of the nine seats, with its then leader Reuben Meade becoming Chief Minister. However, the 2014 elections saw the party reduced to two seats. In the 2019 elections the MCAP won five out of nine seats, with its new leader Easton Taylor-Farrell becoming the new Premier. In March 2024, Samuel Joseph became the party leader.
