2009 Macanese Chief Executive Election
The 2009 Macanese Chief Executive election was held on 26 July 2009 for the 3th term of the Chief Executive of Macau (CE), the highest office of the Macau Special Administrative Region. Fernando Chui was elected without contest after incumbent Chief Executive Edmund Ho was ineligible for reelection under term limit. Background Under the Basic Law of Macau, the mini-constitution, incumbent Chief Executive Edmund Ho was ineligible to run again for the top office as he was re-elected in 2004, meaning a new leader must be selected. Election Committee (Macau)
The Election Committee is a Hong Kong electoral college, the function of which is to select the Chief Executive (CE) and, since 2021, to elect 40 of the 90 members of the Legislative Council. Established by Annex I of the Basic Law of Hong Kong which states that "the Chief Executive shall be elected by a broadly representative Election Committee in accordance with this Law and appointed by the Central People's Government (State Council)." It is formed and performs its selection function once every five years, even in the event of a CE not completing their term. The membership of the Election Committee was expanded to 1,500 under the massive overhaul of the electoral system in 2021. New Macau Association
The New Macau Association (AMN) is a major pro-democratic political party in the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Macau. The party was established in 1992 and the founding chairman was António Ng Kuok Cheong, who departed from the then-mainstream livelihood faction and called for political reform in the colony. The current chairman is Icy Kam Sut Leng. At the, 20 September 2009 election, the association split into two electoral lists – the New Democratic Macau Association and the Prosperous Democratic Macau Association. The two lists combined won 19.35% of popular vote and 3 seats in the legislature. Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) is a television broadcasting company based in Hong Kong SAR. The Company operates five free-to-air terrestrial television channels in Hong Kong, with TVB Jade as its main Cantonese language service, and TVB Pearl as its main English service. TVB is headquartered at TVB City at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate. TVB commenced broadcasting on November 19, 1967. Antonio Ng
António Ng Kuok Cheong (; born September 26, 1957) is currently a member in the Macau Legislative Assembly, returned by direct election. He was the founding chairman of the pro-democratic political party New Macau Association. He is also the leader of the political pressure group Union for Democracy Development. Ng has been a major figure in the Macau democracy movement and is one of the three pro-democratic legislators in the Assembly. After his graduation from Yuet Wah College, Macau, Ng obtained his undergraduate degree in economics at Chinese University of Hong Kong. Once an employee in a Chinese bank in the early 1990s, Ng lost the job due to political pressure from Beijing. The Court of Final Appeal of Macau ( pt, Tribunal de Última Instância de Macau; ) is the court with the final adjudication power on laws of Macau. Prior to 1999, the highest court was the Higher Court of Justice of Macau and prior to that the Court of Appeal of the Judiciary District of Lisbon in Portugal. Under the Basic Law of Macau, which is the constitutional document of the region, Macau remains the previous legal jurisdiction. On the other hand, the power of interpretation of the Basic Law itself, being part of the national law, is vested in the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China (NPCSC) in accordance with the Basic Law. José Maria Pereira Coutinho ComM (; born 22 July 1957) is a Macanese politician and jurist. He has been the Counselor of the Portuguese Communities since 2003, President of Macau Civil Servants Association since 1998, and President of pro-democracy party New Hope and Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Macau since 2005.
