2009 Liberal National Party Of Queensland Leadership Election
The 2009 Liberal National Party of Queensland leadership election was held on 2 April 2009 to elect a new leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) and, ex officio, Leader of the Opposition. Following the LNP's loss at the state election on 21 March 2009, Lawrence Springborg resigned as leader. Springborg had served as leader of the LNP since the party was formed in 2008 following the merger of the Queensland Liberal Party and the Queensland National Party; the latter he had previously led. Three MPs − John-Paul Langbroek, Tim Nicholls and Fiona Simpson − contested the leadership, with Langbroek emerging victorious by a narrow margin on the second ballot. Springborg was elected deputy leader, defeating Jeff Seeney and Rob Messenger, after Mark McArdle did not recontest the position. John-Paul Langbroek
John-Paul Honoré Langbroek is an Australian politician who has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland representing the centre-right Liberal Party and its successor, the right-wing Liberal National Party, in the seat of Surfers Paradise since 2004. He was Leader of the Opposition and parliamentary leader of the LNP from 2009 to 2011—the first person from the Liberal side of the merger to hold the post. He was a minister in the Newman government before its defeat at the 2015 state election. Langbroek was appointed Minister for Education and Minister for the Arts, starting his term on 1 November 2024 under the premiership of David Crisafulli. The leader of the opposition in Queensland is the title of the leader of the largest minority political party or coalition of parties, known as the Parliamentary opposition, Opposition, in the Parliament of Queensland. Electoral District Of Caloundra
Caloundra is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Sunshine Coast in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate is centred on the city of Caloundra and stretches north to Wurtulla, Queensland, Wurtulla, south to Pelican Waters, Queensland, Pelican Waters and west to the Bruce Highway. The seat was held by Mark McArdle, the first deputy leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland, Liberal National Party from 2008 to 2009, and prior to that state Liberal leader from November 2007 to July 2008. McArdle succeeded former Liberal leader Joan Sheldon upon her retirement in 2004. On 27 June 2019, McArdle announced he would retire from politics at the 2020 Queensland state election, 2020 state election. In Australian politics, a leadership spill (or simply a spill) is a declaration that the leadership of a parliamentary party is vacant and open for contest. A spill may involve all or some of the leadership positions (leader and deputy leader in both houses). Where a rival to the existing leader calls for a spill it may also be called a leadership challenge. When successful, it is often said that the former leader has been "rolled". In Australian English the colloquial use of the word "spill" seems to have begun in the mid-1940s with the contest to replace Prime Minister John Curtin after his death on 5 July 1945. When a leadership vacancy arises due to the voluntary resignation or death of the incumbent, the resulting leadership ballot may not be popularly called a leadership spill. Campbell Kevin Thomas Newman (born 12 August 1963) is an Australian former politician who served as the 38th Premier of Queensland from 26 March 2012 to 14 February 2015. He served as the member for Ashgrove in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland between 24 March 2012 and 31 January 2015. 2012 Queensland State Election
The 2012 Queensland state election was held on 24 March 2012 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The Labor Party (ALP), led by Premier Anna Bligh, was defeated by the opposition Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Campbell Newman in a landslide victory. It is only the sixth time that Queenslanders have ousted a sitting government since 1915. The ALP was attempting to win a ninth consecutive election victory, having won every general election since 1989, despite being out of office between 1996 and 1998.
