2009 European Parliament Election In Denmark
European Parliament elections were held in Denmark on 7 June 2009 to elect the 13 Danish members of the European Parliament. The election was held simultaneously with a referendum on changing the Danish Act of Succession. Contesting parties All Danish parties which were represented in the European Parliament announced they would take part in the election. These were the Social Democrats, Venstre (Liberal Party), Conservative People's Party, June Movement, Socialist People's Party, Danish People's Party, Social Liberal Party and the People's Movement against the EU. As in the last election, several electoral coalitions were agreed to before the vote. The Social Democrats sided with the Social Liberal Party and the Socialist People's Party, while Venstre teamed up with the Conservative People's Party and Liberal Alliance. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Danish Social Liberal Party
The Danish Social Liberal Party ( da, Radikale Venstre, , Radical Left) is a social-liberal political party in Denmark. The party was founded as a split from the Venstre Reform Party in 1905. Historically, the centrist party has played a central role in Danish politics and has supported governments on both sides of the political spectrum, as co-operation is a primary belief of the party. Morten Løkkegaard
Morten Løkkegaard (born 20 December 1964) is a Danish politician who has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and the Danish Parliament intermittently since 2009. He has held his current position as a member of the European Parliament since 2016. He represents the Venstre political party and is affiliated with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. Early life and education Løkkegaard was born on 20 December 1964 in Helsingør, Denmark. Jens Rohde (born 18 April 1970) is a Danish politician, who is a member of the Folketing for the Christian Democrats political party. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2014 until 2019, as a member of the Danish Social Liberal Party, part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. Morten Messerschmidt (born 13 November 1980) is a Danish politician and current leader of the Danish People's Party. He was a elected Member of the Folketing at the 2019 Danish general election having previously served from 2005 to 2009. Søren Bo Søndergaard (born 16 August 1955 in Kyndby) is a Danish teacher, metalworker and politician, who is a member of the Folketing for the Red-Green Alliance. He was elected into parliament at the 2015 Danish general election, and previously served from 1994 to 2005. He was a Member of the European Parliament for the People's Movement against the EU and associated member of GUE/NGL from 2007 to 2014. Emilie Turunen (born 13 May 1984 in Copenhagen, Denmark) is a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She was elected to represent the Danish constituency in the 2009 European election as a member of the Socialistisk Folkeparti and the European Green Party. She later switched party affiliation to the Social Democrats and the Party of European Socialists. Margrete Helle Auken (born 6 January 1945) is a Danish politician who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2004. Bendt Bendtsen (born 25 March 1954) is a Danish politician who served as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2009 until 2019.
