2009 Colorado Rapids Season
The 2009 Colorado Rapids season was the fourteenth season of the team's existence. It began on March 21 with a 2-1 loss at Chivas USA and ended on October 24 with a 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. The Colorado Rapids are an American professional soccer club based in the Denver metropolitan area. The Rapids compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. Founded in 1995, as part of the Anschutz Corporation, later to be a founding sports franchise of the global sports & entertainment juggernaut AEG, the club is a founding member of MLS, playing their first season in 1996. The Rapids are owned by the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, also owners of the Denver Nuggets of NBA, Colorado Avalanche of NHL, and other sports teams outside of the state of Colorado. Colorado won the MLS Cup in 2010, their second MLS Cup appearance. The first appearance was in 1997, losing to D.C. United. Greg Dalby
Greg Dalby (born November 3, 1985) is an American soccer coach and former player who is head coach of the Oregon State Beavers men's soccer program. Youth and college career Dalby was born in Newport Beach, California. For eight seasons through his teen years, he played on several San Diego clubs, including San Diego Soccer Club (1996–98), Rancho Bernardo Select (1996–98), La Jolla Nomads (1999–2000), San Diego Surf (1998–99, 2000–03). He was named the 2003 MVP of the San Diego Surf. He attended Poway High School, near San Diego, where his skills were recognized at a national level. In his senior year, he was given the highest U.S. award for any high school player, the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year. He was chosen from hundreds of thousands of males for that award, and given a spot on the under-18 U.S. National Team. Jamie Smith (footballer Born 1980)
James Smith (born 20 November 1980 in Alexandria) is a Scottish retired professional footballer and currently Executive Director at Tennessee United Soccer Club. Prior to this, Smith served as Academy Director for Nashville SC. Smith spent the majority of his playing career in his native country with Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League. He was also capped twice by Scotland. Playing career Early career Born in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Smith started his career with Celtic; a graduate of the club's youth system, he played 66 games and scored six goals in all competitions across his five years as a senior player. Montreal Impact (1992–2011)
The Montreal Impact (french: Impact de Montréal) was a Canadian professional soccer club based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1993, the team played in the United Soccer League. Later, the Impact played in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid until the 2011 season. The owner Joey Saputo now operates the MLS team CF Montréal, which also carried the Montreal Impact name until 2021. The team played its home games at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard until 2008 when it moved to the new Saputo Stadium where it played until its move to MLS. The team's colours were blue and white. The Impact had 11 different head coaches during these years. Ciaran O'Brien
Ciaran Patrick O'Brien (born November 17, 1987) is an American soccer coach and former player. Early life and education O'Brien played center midfield for four years at Decatur High School in Federal Way, Washington, where he earned NSCAA All-American honors, was a First Team All-South Puget Sound League selection for four straight years, and was selected as the Washington State Gatorade Player of the Year after his senior season. O'Brien initially played college soccer for the University of San Diego, where he was a NSCAA Freshman All-American and was named to the All- WCC Second Team, before transferring to UC Santa Barbara in his sophomore year. With the UCSB Gauchos, he made the 2007 NCAA Tournament, losing out to national finalists Ohio State. Matt Pickens (born April 5, 1982) is an American retired soccer player who is currently the goalkeeping coach for Nashville SC in Major League Soccer. Career Youth and amateur Pickens initially attended Meramec Community College before playing college soccer for Missouri State University from 2000 to 2003. He also played for Chicago Fire Premier in the USL Premier Development League. Professional Upon graduating, Pickens was drafted 19th overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Fire. He was not able, however, to break through a deep lineup of Fire goalkeepers, which initially included Henry Ring and D.J. Countess, and later Zach Thornton. Preston Burpo
Preston Burpo (born September 26, 1972 in Bethesda, Maryland) is a retired American soccer player who is currently the goalkeeper coach for Austin FC in Major League Soccer. College Burpo played collegiate soccer at Southern New Hampshire University from 1992 to 1995. During his career there he earned a goals against average of 1.19 and recorded 38 shutouts. He was the first Penman to earn All-Region honors in 1992. Playing career Upon graduating in 1995 he had brief stints with New Hampshire Phantoms and Boston Storm of the USISL, and also played briefly with the Jamaican club team Harbor View FC. Jacob Peterson (born January 27, 1986) is an American former professional soccer player who last played with Atlanta United FC in Major League Soccer. Career College and amateur Peterson played youth soccer for local powerhouse Michigan Wolves, whom he led to four state championships, two midwest regional championships, and a third-place finish at the nationals, He played college soccer at Indiana University for three years from 2003 to 2005 where he scored 30 goals in 71 appearances. Omar Cummings (born 13 July 1982) is a former Jamaican international footballer who played as a forward. He spent his entire professional career in the United States. Career Youth and amateur Cummings attended Jonathan Grant High School, Cincinnati State College and the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in criminal justice. Professional Cummings was selected by the Colorado Rapids in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as a Round 3, number 31 overall pick. Ross Schunk
Ross Schunk (born April 28, 1986 in Portland, Oregon) is an American soccer player who last played for Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer. Career College and Amateur Schunk attended Woodrow Wilson High School, where he acquired his skills under the training of Don Juan Mercado. At a young age, Ross was known for his outstanding crossbar and soccer-tennis skills. Although widely speculated, it's known by many living in southwest Portland, Schunk developed his skills from the founding members of Gabe Academy (Don Juan Mercado and Shiloh were two of the founding fathers, among others). Pat Noonan
Pat Noonan (born August 2, 1980) is an American soccer coach and former soccer player. He is the head coach of FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer. Playing career College and amateur Noonan attended De Smet Jesuit High School, and played college soccer for the Indiana University Hoosiers from 1999 to 2002. He was named an NSCAA first-team All-American his senior and junior seasons, and second-team All-American his sophomore year. His senior year, he also finished as runner-up to Alecko Eskandarian for the Hermann Trophy. He finished his career at Indiana with 48 goals and 31 assists. Facundo Ignacio Diz (born April 16, 1979 in Navarro) is a retired Argentine footballer. Career South America Diz began his career with Club Atlético All Boys in 1997, playing with the club for eight season. He spent brief loan spells in 2004 with Banfield as well as Venezuelan side Deportivo Táchira before returning to Argentina and All Boys for their 2005 campaign.
