2009 California Wildfires
9,159 wildfires were active in the US state of California during 2009. The fires burned more than of land from early February through late November, due to Red flag warning, Red Flag conditions, destroying hundreds of structures, injuring 134 people, and killing four. The wildfires also caused at least US$134.48 million in damage. Although the fires burned many different regions of California in August, the month was especially notable for several very large fires which burned in Southern California, despite being outside of the normal fire season for that region. The Station Fire, north of Los Angeles, was the largest and deadliest of these wildfires. It began in late August, and resulted in the devastation of of land as well as the death of two firefighters. Station Fire (2009)
The Station Fire was the largest wildfire of the 2009 California wildfire season. It burned in the Angeles National Forest, igniting on August 26, 2009, near the U.S. Forest Service Angeles Station 11 ranger station on the Angeles Crest Highway, and burned through October 16. It threatened 12,000 structures in the National Forest and the nearby communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, Glendale, Acton, La Crescenta, Juniper Hills, Littlerock and Altadena, as well as the Sunland and Tujunga neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles. Many of these areas faced mandatory evacuations as the flames drew near, but as of September 6, all evacuation orders were lifted. La Brea Fire
The La Brea Fire was a fast-moving 2009 wildfire which occurred in Southern California in the United States. The fire began near La Brea Creek in Santa Barbara County, in the Los Padres National Forest. The fire started burning on August 8, and just 5 days later on August 13 had grown by 10,000 acres, or 40 km2. When the wildfire was finally contained on August 22, it had burned 89,489 acres (140 sq. mi; 362 km2.) of land. The huge Zaca Fire burned in the same region as the La Brea Fire, and occurred just two years prior in 2007. Progression The fire was first reported on Saturday August 8, 2009 at 2:45pm in the San Rafael Wilderness and grew to a size of 1,300 acres by nightfall.
