2009 Arizona State Sun Devils Baseball Team
The 2009 Arizona State Sun Devils baseball team represented Arizona State University in the 2009 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Sun Devils played their home games at Packard Stadium, and played as part of the Pacific-10 Conference. The team was coached by Pat Murphy (baseball coach), Pat Murphy in his fifteenth season as head coach at Arizona State. The Sun Devils reached the 2009 College World Series, College World Series, their twenty-first appearance in Omaha, where they finished tied for third place after recording a pair of wins against 2009 North Carolina Tar Heels baseball team, North Carolina and losing two to eventual runner-up 2009 Texas Longhorns baseball team, Texas. Pat Murphy (baseball Coach)
Patrick Thomas Murphy (born November 28, 1958) is an American professional baseball coach (baseball), coach and manager (baseball), manager who is the manager for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously served as the interim manager of the San Diego Padres and head coach for college baseball teams including Arizona State University and the University of Notre Dame. Playing career Murphy attended Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and played college baseball for the Florida Atlantic Owls baseball, Florida Atlantic Owls as a catcher and infielder. He also pitching (baseball), pitched on occasion. He was honored on FAU's 20th Anniversary Team as a pitcher and utility player and in 2008 was inducted into the school's Baseball Hall of Fame. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. Surprise, Arizona
Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, in the U.S. state of Arizona. The population was 143,148 at the 2020 census, up from 117,517 in 2010 and just 30,848 in 2000. Surprise is the spring training location of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams. History The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler. Statler was the daughter of another Arizona pioneer, Charles Gillett who helped found Glendale, specifically as a temperance community. Gillett owned much land in Glendale as well as the Verde Valley. Surprise officials previously thought the city was founded by Statler's husband, real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden, but in 2010 property records were discovered which listed Statler owning the land before she met Ludden. Surprise Stadium is a baseball venue located at the Surprise Recreation Campus athletic facility in Surprise, Arizona, United States. The stadium opened in 2002 and seats 10,714 people. 2009 Kansas State Wildcats Baseball Team
The 2009 Kansas State Wildcats baseball team represented Kansas State University in the NCAA Division I college baseball season of 2009. It was the 109th baseball season in school history. The team's head coach was Brad Hill who was in his sixth season at Kansas State. He was previously the head coach at Central Missouri State before coming to Manhattan in 2004. Kansas State made the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The team finished the season by setting the school's record for wins, eight more than the previous school record of 35 in 1976. Joshua S. Holliday (born September 14, 1976) is an American college baseball coach and former professional player in Minor League Baseball. Currently the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys baseball team, he was hired to this position prior to the 2013 season. In 2014, Holliday was the Big 12 Conference Baseball Coach of the Year as OSU claimed the conference regular season championship. Before becoming head coach of the Cowboys, Holliday played college baseball for OSU while attending as a student. Andrew Neal Stankiewicz (born August 10, 1964) is an American former professional baseball player who currently serves as the head coach of the USC Trojans baseball team in Los Angeles. He also played in Major League Baseball as a middle-infielder. Stankiewicz had a seven-year MLB playing career spanning four clubs and 429 appearances. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1986 draft and went on to make his MLB debut with the club in 1992. He also played for the Houston Astros and Montreal Expos before closing out his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks during their inaugural season in 1998. Tim Esmay
Tim Esmay is an American baseball coach. He is the former head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils baseball team. He was the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils baseball team from prior to the 2010 season until the end of the 2014 season, when he announced his resignation. Esmay is an Arizona State alumnus, and he played baseball there from 1986–1987. After graduating from Arizona State in 1987, Esmay served as an assistant at Arizona State, Grand Canyon, and Utah. He was Utah's head coach from 1997–2004, before he was hired as an assistant at Arizona State prior to the 2005 season. From 2005–2009, Esmay served as an assistant under Pat Murphy. Andrew Jerome Maggi (born May 16, 1989) is an American professional baseball infielder for the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field, between first base and third base.
