During the 2008–09 English football season, Tranmere Rovers F.C. competed in Football League One. Season summary In the 2007–08 season, Tranmere finished 11th and their ambition for 2008–09 was the play-offs. Their form in the first half of the season was mixed, but they found themselves in 8th place at Christmas. Tranmere finished 7th, missing out on the play-offs by one point. Despite this 7th-placed finish, manager Ronnie Moore was sacked and replaced by John Barnes in mid-June. A run of 5 games unbeaten in March/April led rovers into the play-off positions with 3 games remaining, but 7th placed Scunthorpe were two points behind and had played two games less. Tranmere lost to fellow play-off contenders Leeds United, but Scunthorpe lost too, leaving Rovers in 6th place. They failed to win their final 2 games, meaning they finished 7th. Danny Coyne
Daniel Coyne (born 27 August 1973) is a Welsh football coach and former professional player. As a player, he was a goalkeeper who played between 1992 and 2018. He came through the youth ranks at Tranmere Rovers during the 1992–93 season. Coyne eventually went on to become the club's first choice keeper and went on to make 111 appearances in the league before signing for Grimsby Town in the summer of 1999. He spent four seasons at Blundell Park, two of which saw him named "Supporters' Player of the Season" and thus becoming an integral part of every Grimsby team he played in. In his final year at Town the club suffered relegation from the Football League First Division. Edrissa Sonko
Edrissa Sonko (born 23 March 1980) is a Gambian former professional football who played as a forward. Club career Sonko was born in Essau. His previous clubs are Steve Biko F.C., Real de Banjul, Anderlecht, Roda JC, Walsall, Tranmere Rovers and Skoda Xanthi. He netted his first Tranmere goal in the win at home to Accrington Stanley in the Football League Trophy in September 2008. Daniel Holmes (born 6 January 1989) is an English football coach and former player who is manage of Northern Premier League club Vauxhall Motors. He is a product of Tranmere Rovers' youth system. Career Tranmere Rovers Holmes was born in Birkenhead, Merseyside. He began his career with Tranmere Rovers, the team he supports, joining the club at the age of seven. He originally played as a forward but eventually became a defender. Having captained the youth and reserve teams, he signed his first professional in July 2007, shortly before the 2007–08 season. Terence Michael Gornell (born 16 December 1989) is an English former footballer who played as a striker. Club career Tranmere Rovers Born in Liverpool, Gornell joined Tranmere Rovers at a young age and after coming through the club's academy, Gornell signed his first professional contract with the club in May 2008. This came after Gornell appeared on the first team bench as an un-used substitute in numbers of occasions in the 2007–08 season. Gareth James Edds (born 3 February 1981) is an Australian former professional footballer who played as a defender or midfielder. He was last employed as the head coach at Northern Fury in 2013. Club career Edds started his career in 1999 with English team Nottingham Forest after going through the AIS system in Australia. At Forest he scored once against Grimsby Town in 16 league appearances. He left for Swindon Town in the summer of 2002. Steven John Jennings (born 28 October 1984) is an English former professional footballer who played as a central midfielder in the English Football League, Scottish Premier League and in English non-League football. Christopher Mark Greenacre (born 23 December 1977) is an English football manager and former player who is the head coach of the Wellington Phoenix FC Reserves. Greenacre began his career with Manchester City in 1996. Whilst at Maine Road he was sent out on loan to Cardiff City, Blackpool, Scarborough, Northampton Town and Mansfield Town in order to gain first team experience. However, he failed to make the grade at Manchester City and so joined Mansfield Town on a permanent transfer.
