2008 Rugby League World Cup
The 2008 Rugby League World Cup was the thirteenth World Cup for men’s rugby league national teams. It was held between 26 October and 22 November and was won by New Zealand, who defeated Australia 34–20 in the final in one of the greatest upsets in the sports history. Originally there was a plan to hold a World Cup in Australia in 2004, however the lack of competitiveness at the 2000 World Cup and rise of the Tri-Nations between Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain meant that plans for another World Cup were shelved. For the World Cup to regain some credibility, the number of teams was reduced to ten with Australia, England, France, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand automatically qualifying and a qualifying tournament to determine the other five teams. The tournament ended a year of celebrations commemorating the centenary of the game in the southern hemisphere and was part of the Festival of World Cups. Johnathan Thurston
Johnathan Dean Thurston (born 25 April 1983) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the National Rugby League (NRL). Thurston was an Australian international, Queensland State of Origin and Indigenous All Stars representative, playing at or , and was a noted goal-kicker. Stephen Kearney
Stephen Peter Kearney (born 11 June 1972) is a New Zealand professional rugby league football coach who until 2020 was the head coach of the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL and a former player. A New Zealand national captain and second-row forward, Kearney's club football career, which spanned from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, was played for the Randwick Kingfishers, Western Suburbs Magpies, Auckland Warriors, Melbourne Storm (with whom he won the 1999 NRL Premiership), and Hull F.C. Scott Byron Grix (born 1 May 1984) is a former Ireland international rugby league footballer who last played as a for Halifax Panthers in the Championship. He previously played for the Doncaster Dragons, Halifax, Leigh Centurions and the Widnes Vikings in National League One. John Monie
John Stephen Monie (born 6 October 1946) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s, and coached in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. He is probably best known for his coaching career where he won premierships in both Australia and England. Playing career Monie was a Standoff who played for his local club on the Central Coast, Woy Woy. After playing in over 100 first grade games for Woy Woy, in 1968 he moved to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Josaia Rabele "Joe" Dakuitoga (born 25 September 1965), also known as Jo Rabele, is a Fijian professional rugby league coach who is the current coach of the Fiji Women aka Fiji Bulikula, and a former professional rugby league footballer. James Darryl Peacock MBE, (born 14 December 1977) is an English motivational speaker, leadership mentor and former professional rugby league footballer.
