2008 Nuneaton And Bedworth Borough Council Election
Elections to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council were held on 1 May 2008. Half of the council was up for election and the Conservative Party gained control of the council from Labour. This was the first time that the British National Party had fielded candidates in the Borough for election to the Borough Council. Nuneaton And Bedworth
Nuneaton and Bedworth is a local government district with borough status, in northern Warwickshire, England, consisting of the towns of Nuneaton and Bedworth, the large village of Bulkington and the green belt land inbetween. It had a population of 129,883 at a 2019-estimate. It borders the Warwickshire districts of Rugby to the east, and North Warwickshire to the west. To the south, it borders the city of Coventry in the West Midlands county, and to the north the Hinckley and Bosworth district of Leicestershire. The borough is governed by the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council. As of the most recent local election, the council is under Conservative Control. History The Nuneaton and Bedworth district was created on 1 April 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972. It was from the merger of the Municipal Borough of Nuneaton, a municipal borough, and Bedworth Urban District, an urban district which included Bulkington. Nuneaton And Bedworth Borough Council Elections
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council elections are held every other year, with half the council being elected each time. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is the local authority for the non-metropolitan district of Nuneaton and Bedworth in Warwickshire, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2002, 34 councillors have been elected from 17 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards. Prior to 2002 elections were held three years out of every four, with a third of the council elected each time. Political control The town of Nuneaton had been a municipal borough from 1907 to 1974 with a borough council. The first elections to the enlarged Nuneaton Borough created under the Local Government Act 1972 were held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority until the new arrangements came into effect on 1 April 1974. 2008 English Local Elections
The 2008 United Kingdom local elections were held on 1 May 2008. These elections took place in 137 English Local Authorities and all Welsh Councils. There were also extraordinary elections held for four of the new unitary authorities being created, in Northumberland, County Durham and Cheshire (two councils – Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester). Scheduled elections for Penwith in Cornwall, Shrewsbury and Atcham in Shropshire, Bedford and South Bedfordshire in Bedfordshire and five district councils in Cheshire were cancelled, due to the up-coming unitary authorities being established in those counties. The Labour Party finished in 3rd place by vote share, trailing the Conservatives by 20%, the largest such margin ever between the two main parties.
