Armando (artist)
: ''For the online writer/blogger, see Daily Kos.'' Armando (18 September 1929 – 1 July 2018), born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, was a Dutch painter, sculptor and writer. Biography Armando was born in Amsterdam, and as child moved to Amersfoort. There he saw, during the Second World War, German occupation of the Netherlands, how the Nazis set up a "transition camp" for prisoners who were to be sent to concentration camps. The suffering of the victims and the cruelty of the Nazi camp guards, so near his home, influenced him for the rest of his life. After the liberation (1945), he studied art history at the University of Amsterdam. His first solo exhibition was at the Galerie Le Canard, Amsterdam, in 1954. At this time he also started to write poetry. He was influenced by the COBRA (avant-garde movement), CoBrA art group, and made abstract drawings—with his left hand, in the dark. São Paulo Museum Of Art
The São Paulo Museum of Art (, or ') is an art museum in São Paulo, Brazil. It is well known for the architectural significance of its headquarters, a 1968 concrete and glass structure designed by Lina Bo Bardi. It is considered a landmark of the city and a symbol of modern Brazilian architecture. The museum was founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand and Pietro Maria Bardi, and is maintained as a non-profit institution. MASP distinguished itself by its involvement in several important initiatives concerning museology and art education in Brazil, as well as for its pioneering role as a cultural center. Candido Portinari
Candido Portinari (December 29, 1903 – February 6, 1962) was a Brazilian painter. He is considered one of the most important Brazilian painters as well as a prominent and influential practitioner of the neo-realism style in painting. Portinari painted more than five thousand canvases, from small sketches to monumental works such as the '' Guerra e Paz'' panels, which were donated to the United Nations Headquarters in 1956. Portinari developed a social preoccupation throughout his oeuvre and maintained an active life in the Brazilian cultural and political worlds. ''Portrait of Suzanne Bloch'' is an oil on canvas painting executed by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in Paris in 1904, towards the end of his Blue Period. Julio Romero De Torres
Julio Romero de Torres (9 November 1874 – 10 May 1930) was a Spanish painter. His brothers, Rafael and , also became painters. Biography He was the son of Rafael Romero Barros, a painter who served as Director of the Fine Arts Museum of Córdoba. When he was ten, he began his apprenticeship with his father at the School Of Fine Arts. His first known works, ''Head of an Arab'' and ''On Horseback'', date from 1889. Two years later, he was providing illustrations for the '' Diario de Córdoba. In 1895, he had his first showing at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where he received honorable mention. Although he attempted to win a scholarship to the Spanish Academy in Rome in 1897, he was unsuccessful. The following year, his brother Rafael died, aged only thirty-three. La Fuensanta
''La Fuensanta'' is a portrait painting by Spanish artist Julio Romero de Torres depicting María Teresa López González, one of Torres' models. Gonzalez is depicted with her arms resting on a copper cauldron. The painting was made in the autumn of 1929, when Torres completed another two artworks, '' La Chiquita Piconera'' and ''Bodegas Cruz Conde''. "Fuensanta" is a Spanish girl’s name that means "holy fountain." Born in Argentina, González moved with her family to Torres' native town of Córdoba after World War I. After she first sat for Torres at the age of fourteen, González became one of his favourite models whose likeness is most closely associated to Torres. According to Sotheby's, the work has been "proclaimed as a quintessential rendition of Andalucian beauty". It was depicted for 25 years on the 100 peseta banknote.
