2007 Lebanese By-elections
By-elections were held in Lebanon on 5 August 2007 to replace two assassinated MPs, Pierre Amine Gemayel of the Kataeb Party (killed on the 21 November 2006) and Walid Eido of the Future Movement (killed on the 13 June 2007). Their respective districts were Matn District and Beirut Beirut II, 2nd District. Beirut election In the Beirut election, the following stood for election: *Mohammad Amin Itani for the Future Movement (March 14 Alliance) — 22,988 *Ibrahim Halabi for the People's Movement (Lebanon), People's Movement (March 8 Alliance) — 3,556 The seat was won by Mohammed al-Amin Itani, a candidate of March 14 Alliance, parliament majority leader Saad Hariri's Future Movement, with a large majority. The Hezbollah-led pro-Syrian opposition did not officially sponsor a candidate. Turnout was very low, at just 19 per cent. Hezbollah
Hezbollah ( ; , , ) is a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary group. Hezbollah's paramilitary wing is the Jihad Council, and its political wing is the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc party in the Lebanese Parliament. Its armed strength was assessed to be equivalent to that of a medium-sized army in 2016. Hezbollah was founded in 1982 by Lebanese clerics in response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Elections In Lebanon
Elections in Lebanon are allotted to occur every four years. Every citizen is allowed to vote, but the positions are constitutionally allocated by religious affiliation. Lebanon was ranked second most electoral democracy in the Middle East according to V-Dem Democracy indices in 2023 with a score of 0.157 out of 1. Those who are above 21 and are non active military personnel are permitted to vote. Elections in Lebanon are made up of loose coalitions, usually organized locally, which are formed for electoral purposes by negotiation among clan leaders and candidates representing various religious communities; such coalitions usually exist only for the election and rarely form a cohesive block in the Parliament after the election. Amine Gemayel
Amine Pierre Gemayel (, ; born 22 January 1942) is a Lebanese politician who served as the eighth president of Lebanon from 1982 to 1988. Gemayel was born in Bikfaya to Pierre Gemayel, the founder of the Christianity in Lebanon, Christian Kataeb Party (also known as the "Phalanges"). He worked as a lawyer, then was elected as a deputy for Northern Metn in 1970 by-election, following the death of his uncle, Maurice Gemayel, and once again in the 1972 general election. The Free Patriotic Movement (, ) is a Lebanese political party. Founded by Michel Aoun in 1994, the party is currently led by Aoun's son-in-law Gebran Bassil since 2015. Camille Khoury
Camille Khoury (Arabic: كميل خوري; born 1961 in Lebanon), is the Free Patriotic Movement representative in the Matn riding near Beirut, Lebanon. In August 2007, Khoury was elected in Matn over former Lebanese president Amine Gemayel by a margin of 418 votes. The official tally was 39,534 against 39,116 for Gemayel. The seat had been vacant since the murder of Pierre Amine Gemayel, who was killed in an attack in Lebanon earlier that year.
