2007 Gibraltar General Election
General elections were held in Gibraltar on 11 October 2007. The incumbent Chief Minister Peter Caruana narrowly won a fourth term, but opposition leader Joe Bossano had a very strong showing. Joe Bossano noted that this would be his last term as an MP, and joked that he would not join the government, despite receiving a higher personal vote than some members of the Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD). The GSD had ten candidates (all of whom were elected), Bossano's party the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP) had seven candidates (four of whom were elected) and the Liberal Party of Gibraltar (LPG) led by Dr. Joseph Garcia had three candidates (all of whom were elected). The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) fielded six candidates, five of whom obtained the fewest votes in the election after a lacklustre campaign. Gibraltar Parliament
The Gibraltar Parliament is the legislature of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. Between 1969 and 2006, it was called the Gibraltar House of Assembly. Functions The House of Assembly, set up under the 1969 constitution, was a unicameral body originally consisting of 15 members elected by the Gibraltar electorate, plus two appointed members including the Attorney-General. The term "House of Assembly" has been commonly used for the legislatures of British territories that are less than fully sovereign. It was replaced by the current Gibraltar Parliament by the new 2006 constitution, reflecting an increase in its sovereignty. All 17 of the new Parliament's members are elected. Fabian Picardo
Fabian Raymond Picardo (born 18 February 1972) is a Gibraltarian politician and barrister, serving as Chief Minister of Gibraltar and Leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party since 2011. At the 2015 and 2019 Gibraltar general elections, Picardo was re-elected to two further four-year terms. He was narrowly re-elected for a fourth term in the 2023 Gibraltar general election. Picardo attended the University of Oxford, where he studied jurisprudence. Early life and education Picardo was born on 18 February 1972 in Gibraltar and grew up in the Upper Town area. He has said that the area where he grew up "always made me think about the huge potential that the bay of Gibraltar could have as long as we were able to work together with our Spanish neighbours." GSLP–Liberal Alliance
The GSLP–Liberal Alliance is a centre-left political alliance active in Gibraltar consisting of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP) and Liberal Party of Gibraltar (LPG). History The first election contested by the Alliance was the 2000 general election in February 2000, in which the GSLP and LPG (the latter the direct successor of the Gibraltar National Party) won 7 seats in the House of Assembly, losing to the centre-right Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD). Yvette Del Agua is a Gibraltarian legal executive and former politician. She served as a Minister for the Government of Gibraltar from 2000 to 2011. Biography Yvette Del Agua was born in Gibraltar on 21 October 1957, daughter to Joseph and Lourdes Montegriffo. She attended St. Mary's Infant School, Loreto High School and the Commercial & Secretarial School ( Town Range). She started working at age 17 as a clerical assistant. Del Agua married in 1976 to Clive Del Agua, with whom she had three daughters, Zillah, Danielle and Gail. For several years, she devoted herself entirely to their family, and only returned to work in 1983, when she was hired as a production secretary for the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation.
